Problems With Eczema?

When I was a child I had really bad eczema, we went around all the creams, and the problems I had was the greasy creams made me worse, while the regular moisturisers just dried in within about 10 mins. I went around all the creams and eventually came across a steroid cream called Eumovate, It cleared my eczema up and i've not had an issue since until now.

I've been using Eumovate every day for the past 10 or more years until last week when my doctor decided to stop it as apparently its bad for the skin, She put me on Double Base and Diprobase cream, that was a week ago and now the problems have surfaced again. My skin is starting to break out in sores again, you put the cream on and it dries in almost instantly, My skin is like a sponge.

What exactly do I do? Eumovate is the only cream that works yet she won't prescribe it anymore.

I can't believe you've been using eumovate for 10 years! Aren't you just supposed to use it for a week or 2?

I have eczema but it's mild, I get away with just a heavy moisturiser - not one specifically for eczema, just one I found by trial and error that worked. I used eumovate for a while too - I agree it's really effective.

I have got a patch of eczema under my arm. I have not had eczema for about twenty years and then this appears a month of so ago out of the blue. I have just been using
E45 cream for just now until I can find something better but I am a bit wary of using steroid cream.

Is this your GP or dermatologist? If not asked to be referred as they may know of something more effective.

I get bad eczema on my legs and use Unguentum M which I find really helps. It's non-steroidal so you can use it all the time and it's not too greasy. You should be able to get it over the counter (though last time I asked at Boots they said it was prescription only but I tried a little chemist and they sold it to me  )

    Hi there,

I had eczema all my life (used to flair up quite bad at times where all my joints used to crack due to the dryness).

A few years ago I heard about this new ointment called Protopic and had to fight for it (doctor would not give me a perscription for it as it was too expensive and I had to be refered to a specialist - I got to see him 6 months later and he checked me out and signed me up for it).

The effects were amazing and I've been vertually eczema free for several years now.

There is more info here: http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100004717.html

Also I take Evening Primrose capsules & fish oil capsules daily and that helps.

    Good luck, Mark.

I have what I think is mild eczema that comes and goes - on the backs of my hands, elbows and ears. My doctor has prescribed Betnovate cream and it usually clears it up in a few of days.

I'm interested in the answers because I had eczema as a child and then nothing until about six months ago when I got a bad patch behind one knee. A couple of months ago the other knee developed a similar patch behind it. I try to only use steroid creams very sparingly (maybe for a week every month or so) but it keeps flaring up quite painfully and other moisturisers just aren't cutting it. I'm concerned the dry patches on my arms will turn to full on eczema soon.

Sorry to hear that tallbutshort - can you go back to the doctor for something else? That can't be good if you're having a burning sensation.

I had a look at the cream I use - it's lanolin cream. You can get it from a normal chemists. I bought it once when I was desperate and it was all they had - I usually got non-lanolin creams as I thought they were better. It stops the itching pretty much instantly, though I understand my eczema is milder than yours. It might be worth getting a tube and just trying a little patch.

edited: I was just googling lanolin cream to check, and it does seem quite popular for eczema. Some people seem to be allergic to it though, so definitely try a test patch if you do get it.

    Eczema - corticosteroids or moisturisers.

    Acne - creams/antibiotics or accutane.

The nightmare is when you have both acne and eczema at the same time. You can't dry out your skin because it will flare the eczema and you can't moisturise because it will induce the acne.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will mention all the above to my doctor tomorrow, I must be allergic to something in doublebase, Infact when I was on my trial and error testing some years ago, there was alot of creams that made me breakout, I know some people are allergic to parafin, that could be my problem

I was very very lucky in that department, I never had Acne

Try Simple Derma Relief - it's got natural ingredients and works well for me - think it claims to work in 4 days. Stops the itching a bit too.

I always find when my eczema flares up, spots almost always come up after it disappears. It's a vicious circle :(
