my post was referring to their choice of headwear, nothing to do with cleavage/neckline ... Joan and Shirley chose subtle appropriate hats whereas Katherine went for an attention seeking style more suited for a wedding/Ladies Day at Ascot

I applaud her for her marathon achievement, but her singing voice and over exposure on TV and media events is pretty irritating to me

Her hat passed me by to be honest - it seemed everyone was pointing to her cleavage!

If I'm honest - KJ gets on my wick too - but I applaud her for completing the Marathon - I doubt I could do it!

It's because she's Welsh. Many English people are notoriously anti-Welsh. Just look at Neil Kinnock and the way the press went after him for being Welsh, largely contributing to his election loss.

Nothing to do with him spending most of his tenure as Labour leader fighting members of his own party then?

Kinnock did have an image problem (his baldness and his ginger hair worked against him more than his Welshness IMHO - when did we last have a bald prime minister???) but trying to modernise the Labour Party in the '80s was like trying to turn the Titanic.

Kinnock lost because people thought he would raise their taxes, repeal Right to Buy and allow the unions to take over the country again. Not because he was Welsh.

I was amazed she was invited to the funeral in the first place. Saw her in the paper & just thought, 'Why is she there?'

Apparently she once had tea with the Baroness and that was a good enough reason for turning up. :D

that is a shallow opinion if ever i saw one, but in answer to your equally shallow question. we have had bald prime ministers, but we have never had a prime minister that was born in wales.;)

i don't buy the fact that katherine and neil are welsh is the true source of their criticism any more than i believe it is due to their respective looks. however, in katherine`s case, she clearly rubs people up the wrong way and continues to do so. even after running a marathon for charity, some people couldn't applaud her efforts without using the opportunity to stick the boot in once again.

It's not a shallow opinion, it's a FACT that Kinnock's image worked against him. I didn't say that was right. I am a baldie, so I'm hardly likely to be baldist myself, but the fact remains that we haven't had a bald prime minister in a very, very long time, hence my "shallow" question. During the TV era, image has become more and more important, which is why a Blair lookalike like Cameron was far more electable than Iain Duncan Smith or William Hague.

well it is quite a shallow opinion really, whether it's a harsh fact or purely fiction. however, you pointed out two wider issues with his leadership yourself and at that time thatcher won her elections based on her policies over her image in my personal opinion.

But the point is that it's not "MY" shallow opinion. I'm not judging anyone's abilities based on how they look, I'm looking at the evidence and the evidence is suggesting now that you won't become PM of this country unless you look a certain way and perform well on TV. I think it's sad that a bald man would probably never win an election today, but the fact we haven't had a bald PM for many decades (and the party leaders are getting younger) tells its own story.

Similarly, if Jenkins was ugly (or even plain), would she be famous? Seriously?

the ability to perform well on tv is actually a fair point. i make a lot of my judgements on politicians based on how they perform in debate on "question time" for example. those opinions are formed purely on their ability though and not on their looks in any way.

two words, susan boyle. now i am not suggesting she is uneasy on the eye, but she is the complete opposite to katherine image wise and she is also a crossover singer.

Maybe you don't judge them on their looks, but a lot of people do is my point.

Regardless of his politics, Kinnock was actually a far better orator and debater than any of the party leaders today, who all seem to have come off the same bland production line.

There's always the exception that proves the rule as they say. Is Boyle still popular though? She doesn't seem to be getting as much coverage as Jenkins recently. Most of the interest in Jenkins seems to be because of her looks rather than her voice, which is how she differs from Boyle or Adele. I maintain that without the looks I don't think Jenkins would be very famous and get much coverage. She doesn't really stand out too much as a singer IMHO.

so you can understand why i found your comment shallow then?

well that is actually two exceptions to the rule in your own opinion. two exceptions that have proved far more successful than katherine also. so based on that, surely it would have been possible for her to have found fame on her singing alone?

Not really, as you appeared to be accusing ME of being shallow, when I was merely commenting on the shallowness that has become part of modern politics. I never said it was right, I merely questioned when we last had a bald prime minister, which I think I'm right in saying was in the 1950s (so basically I'm onto something in thinking that the TV era has had something to do with it).

I'm not a big fan of Adele or Boyle. However, I think they are more successful for their voices than their looks. I have to grant them that. I think the opposite is true of Jenkins.

no, i wrote your opinion was shallow and i also thought the question was too. you explained you didn't agree with the opinion personally, but i assume from this post that you still firmly believe his baldness did go against him. we will have to agree to disagree then, because while i agree, the way politicians carry themselves on tv is crucial. in all honesty, i would hope that politicians aren't elected even partly on their looks.

again, we will have to agree to disagree. many people think that of katherine, evidently so by the many comments on the thread alone. out of the three singers, i would actually only suggest adele is the one who is truly musically gifted. however, you did ask if i seriously believed she could have been a famous without her looks and i honestly think she could have. in a world where people are famous without having any noticeable talent, its not really beyond that realms of possibility and i also give you an example of a singer from the same genre that did so without a similar image.

Katherine is a lovely looking woman but seems to need to appear CONSTANTLY in heavy make up, false eye lashes, hair bleached to an Inch of its life etc....... even when running a Marathon!!!!. I think if she just relaxed a bit and stopped looking like a 1930 Film Star, the public might actually like her more. She is always a bit too much for me, too blonde, too much White teeth and Comes across rather plastic! Sorry, I just cannot warm to her.[/QUOTE]

I think this is so true. That's why I said that she seems more plastic than human.

I guess she comes across as a typical "luvvie" type that people just don't like.

I cant say I find her interesting or warm but the Mail article is just pure bile.

KJ looked fabulous at the funeral and pretty amazing at the end of the marathon - good for her. I look like rubbish at the end of a run. £25k raised for charity and DM chooses to slate her looks.

Yes, I'm not a fan especially, but she ran a marathon looking glam and takes care of her appearance; so what?

I remember her ruining the duet with Rhydian on the X Factor final with her foghorn, bellowing vibrato

The press went after Kinnock because he was a pillock and a crap politician. Still good to see he stuck to his socialist beliefs and didn't take advantage to get his wife and son and himself high profile well paying jobs that made him millions. Oh ! actually he did !

I'd wager Kinnock failing had nothing to do with his being Welsh. And all to do with being a useless idiot.

Alas, the Lord Kinnock of Bedwellty is doing all right for himself these days. Doing a Prescott and sticking to his socialist morals, by taking a peerage and sitting in the Lords with all the other 100-year old stuffed waxworks.

that could be a possibility, but then again, most people tend not to bear grunges over a singing performance from over 5 years ago. although, this is jan moir that we are speculating about, the alleged xenophobe and former stonewall bigot of the year.

Nothing wrong with it at all, but how can someone look so fresh after running it? I am genuinely perplexed.
