I don't think she was completley disrespected when she was alive as she could still be a diva. Jack Lemmon adn tony Curits are both on record as saying she was a total nightmare to work with on Some like it hot and she was very, very late for her infamous performace to JFK on his birthday.
She was off her face when she sang that and had notorious drug and alcohol problems which led to constant lateness and inability to remember her lines.
When she died she had just been sacked from her last movie, 'Something's got to give' for that kind of behaviour. I don't think that was because she had respect so she could behave like a diva, I don't even think it was diva behaviour, it was just the behaviouir of someone who was very, very sick.
I remember watching a documentary about her. It said because of her drug and alcohol problems there were issues when she was filming Some Like It Hot to the extent that there was no rehearsal, if she was there and lucid they filmed everything possible because they had no idea when she would be able to carry on.
