Not early at all, considering how busy they will be from the next few weeks till the end of next year.
that's right, we don't expect them to finish recording the whole album in one go... the songs they recorded now can be put in post production whilst they're awaiting for their next free time to record more (after their US summer tour)...
that should make for a more interesting, varied sound as things can happen in the next few months whilst touring like new inspirations and influences...
like the first album, i expect them to put every song and lyric to the crucial test: can they relate to it? do they believe it?
can't wait as well what ed sheeran and tom mcfly have cooked up for the boys this time; and if the boys actually had time to pen some of their songs...:)

Judging by tweets I reckon Zayn could be the lyricist of the group with Harry 2nd . Liam's lyrics would have to go through a spell checker which would give the words a whole other meaning
