I've seen quite a few copies of this so a lot of british holidaymakers must have brought copies back....
Peret - "Borriquito" (1971) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zexRCQFFBAs
This must be at least 20 years old probably before most of the music forum members were born . Got the English version at the same time but it wasn't as good . Still a fantastic track .
I completely love this song!!! I bought it when it came out in the 1980's. It's powerful and haunting. A few years ago I think the Pet Shop Boys commented on their like of it. Another great Italian song around the same time was La Valle Del Eden by Nino Di Angelo that was avaialble also in German as Jenseits Von Eden and English as Guardian Angel.

Aww, I loved that song when I was little. I assumed it was a big hit as I heard it on the radio a lot... but it didn't even make the top 40. Despite his name, I always assumed the guy was German because of his pronounciation of 'winterssss day'.

This is pretty epic. I don't know why, it reminds me a bit of Don Henley's 'New York Minute'. I also liked it when he teamed up with that other guy in the specs for the Dutch World Cup song.

The UK don't have an equivalent artist to his popularity really. Everything the guy releases has gone to number one over the last 20 years, and he can sell out footy stadiums 10 nights in a row in a country with a population of just 6 million!

Always loved Gloria Estefan since the early days of MSM. I have most of her albums on cassette still and one favourite is Abriendo Puertas, a stand out track would be La Parranda http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5531620cWE
Comme des enfants - Coeur de Pirate. Adieu - Coeur de Pirate.
Gorgeous piano-pop that could easily be big in Anglophone markets - probably the big indie superstar of the Francophone world. She's probably the reason I jumped three 'official' levels in French over a year.
Poupée de cire, poupée de son - France Gall.
A Eurovision winner by the French Gall, written by the French (wonderful asshole) Gainsbourg, performed for..Luxembourg. Heard it in a cafe in Brussels over the summer and got shivers from that backing music.
Le moribond - Jacques Brel. Les pays plats - Jacques Brel.
'Le moribond's a classic, (also known as the original of Seasons in the Sun'), but 'Les pays plats' is one of my favourites. I lived in Belgium when I was learning French and I empathise with his love for his home country so much, I'd take it over France any day.
Avant qu'elle part - Sexion d'Assaut.
Probably one of the biggest French hip-hop/rap act atm but I find them oddly listenable? Their big song is 'Ma direction', but I love this one. Plus it's about leurs mamans. Aw.

I like nearly all of these. Ella, Elle L'a was my favourite song for many years after it came out but even though I am a big fan of Stock, Aitken & Waterman I really wasn't keen on their remix of it that was on the 12" single.
I love this single by Mylene Farmer "Du Temps". She and the dancers are all good looking. She has such class and beauty that has never faded with age;

Dah DAH, dah-DAHHHH!
Never heard this before, but it's fantastic, I can just imagine the Pet Shop Boys doing an English version.
Back up to date, this girl sang the Emeli Sande bits on an Italian release of Professor Green's 'Read All About It' (he didn't rap in Italian btw.

In fact it's quite rare for him to sing this song as the crowd usually sing it for him like this:

Old but still sooo great (and I don't like rap and R'nb normally).
The text is powerfull, it's too bad most people outside of France don't understand.

La fille de Lido - Inna Modja.
Sung part in English, she's clearly all about the Francophone markets. I love this girl - her songs are happy, poppy, catchy. Love her.
Elle me dit - Mika.
I know it's Mika, but I loved his brief foray into French-pop. Another song about Mums, it seems.
