any recommendations for a cheap portable wifi device?
It would be mainly for browsing the internet, but means to dump memory card contents (CF or SD) onto internal storage (at least a few gig) would be a bonus but I am not hopeful.

Anyway, if anyone cares I went for the Archos 605 and it really does the trick.
For 230quid you can get the 30Gb Archos + Mini Dock + Webbrowser. Now I can surf the internet via wifi, backup photos from my digital cameras, not to mention video playback, music, etc. OK it's not the most beautiful thing in the world but I don't care about that...
