England ranked 20th in the world

England have fallen to 20th in the latest Fifa world rankings, their lowest position since May 1996.

The drop of 10 places following a poor World Cup means they are behind Bosnia-Hercegovina, Costa Rica and the USA.

We've probably gone back up after 4 wins in a row...

Still 20th. Went up to 18th after two of those wins and have gone back down to 20th again as they don't give out many ranking points for beating San Marino.

That said, looking at the rankings the teams that have overtook England in that period didn't exactly play any powerhouses either. Algeria moved from 20th to 15th on the back of beating 109th ranked Malawi twice. Ukraine moved from 24th to 19th for beating Macedonia (99) and Belarus (96).

Estonia are ranked 88, and England got more points in that match than Algeria or Ukraine did in either of theirs. However, San Marino are 208 in the world and England got considerably less than Ukraine and Algeria for their wins in that one.

It's all really close. Scotland are 36, Slovenia 37 - wins in the next 2 for England would give a good amount of points and probably see a leap up the rankings. The Slovenia one is worth more of course as it's a qualifier.

I'm looking forward to the Faroe Islands shooting up the rankings after beating Greece last night.

New rankings out tomorrow, found a blogger who tracks these, reckons Faroe Islands will be up 82 places to 105.

    England supposedly up to 13th.

    Top 20:

    1 Germany
    2 Argentina
    3 Colombia
    4 Belgium
    5 Netherlands
    6 Brazil
    7 = France
    7 = Portugal
    9 Spain
    10 Uruguay
    11 Italy
    12 Switzerland
    13 England
    14 Chile
    15 Romania
    16 Costa Rica
    17 Czech Republic
    18 Algeria
    19 Croatia
    20 Mexico

    20 Mexico

And everything - the Top 20, England being 13th and the Faroes rocketing up the standings to 105 - is correct.

England now up to 9th and Wales 10th, both above Spain!

The rankings are all over the place since the new procedure, far too volatile

These rankings are just ridiculous. Wales really the 10th best team in the world? Cape Verde were 38th in the last rankings?

I know and who would have thought England are the 9th best team. Seriously though the rankings just reflect current form.

It's an absolute joke. Wales have achieved nothing in football and yet they're in top 10. The system seriously needs looking at.

    Romania in 8th, wow.

Top of their current qualifying group featuring the the giants that are Northern Ireland, Hungary, Faroe Islands, Finland and Greece. Faroe Islands are actually ahead of 2 teams in that group which says a lot.

Romania have failed to reach the last 4 world Cups and 2 of the last 3 Euros, going out in the group stage without winning a match the one time they did make it in '08.

You know exactly how the rankings work, how they are weighted and what matches they take into account. In the same way you can't judge a PL season on a month's worth of games, you can't judge a whole country's footballing pedigree on the two-year window in which the rankings are calculated.

In competitive matches since July 2013, our record is P11 W5 D3 L3. England's is P13 W9 D2 L2. But because you beat lower ranked teams, you get less points per game than we got for beating teams that were in the top 10 in the world. It's a form league, simple as.

FIFA Rankings are based on a 4 year cycle so they always take into account the most recent World Cup.

It is a shame that Portugal never goes very far in big stages despite their rankings :(:(

They have a few great individual players ; some of the best in the world but sadly that's not enough.

If Wales had beaten Israel they were forecast to move upto 4th, not sure what a draw has done to the rankings.

They'll be 8th according to the blogger who made this post - http://www.football-rankings.info/2015/09/fifa-ranking-october-2015-final-preview.html

I've looked up things before on that blog, he's usually spot on. He even offers his services to FA's looking to improve their ranking as the rankings can be somewhat manipulated depending on who you choose to play in friendlies, or even by choosing not to play them at all. Don't know if any have actually consulted him.

Edit: Says he's worked with the Romanian FA to get them into pot 1 in a draw by advising them not to play frriendlies for 12 months - http://www.football-rankings.info/p/consulting.html
