I think it's disgraceful that British people are being turfed out of their council/housing association properties which they've lived in for years due to this ridiculous bedroom tax only to make room for a family of immigrants who haven't paid a penny into our system.
I have noticed a dramatic change in the amount of immigrants on British streets in the last 4 years. I genuinely feel like a minority at times.
I think a lot of it is impatience. There are so many young people around here living in council properties and i dont think they need to. We are talking 17 year olds who believe they should have their own flat because they have a baby. They dont want to share a room with their baby but dont work so cant afford to rent a place of their own.
A relation of mine recently had a baby (shes just turned 17) and her mum has made it clear that she will do everything she possibly can to keep her loving at home until she can afford to support herself. Unlike the majority of young mums shes actually makingthe most of having her mum teach her how to raise the baby, while she is studying and working part time. Im sure evenif shes living at home in her twenties, she will appreciate it more when she can rent her own place rather than be given a council property.
Its a shame other girls are so quick to grow up, expecting that by the time they are twenty they will be living independantly, so if they cant afford it they end up having babies to fund it. Although when you see some peoples attitudes (ive seen it on this forum) that you are a failure if you are in your twenties and living at home, its no wonder people want to move out asap.
Why is it that when anyone mentions immigration on this forum they are bombarded with brain dead responses such as this? Those stats clearly illustrate that immigration is partly to blame for the current housing crisis. Do we not have a right to be concerned by this?
That's just the typical Left wing response to anybody that dares to mention immigration.
I remember during the "New" Labour heyday, when anyone who dared to to even utter the the word immigration was officially labelled a racist.
Now that it's been proved that most peoples fears were in fact justified, you get the usual rubbish about more could have been done etc.
Well from some of the comments on DS, a lot of posters don't like people who were born in Britain living in them either.
Very true.
Thatcher sold off the council houses, that causes a far greater problem then immigration. I suppose it is far more fun to blame everything on the foreigners
So if someone from China or Nigeria turns up to the UK, asks for a free house, they just get one? Seriously?
Of course the don't, typical brain dead response to blame everything on the foreigners and assume they get it so easy while hard working nice British families suffer.

But if UK residents buy homes to live in then it isn't taking homes from uk residents. Unlike if a non UK residents takes a home.
So although buying council homes hasn't helped (mainly because more homes were not built to replace them) it is not the same as non UK residents taking council homes.

Roma gypsies in ireland are getting a free gp service where a medical van drives round and treats them. Noone else foreigners or irish alike are getting this service . It's been reported in the media here. So yesit can be the case that immigrants can get special treatment
I've no problem with anyone living in them and lived in one myself up until a few years ago, but it's the sense of entitlement that is the issue. For example, I recently witnessed a girl who is looking for a council house and turns down any property which doesn't have a "double aspect" i.e. front door in the middle and rooms either side.
Well, if she keeps asking for 'double aspect' she'll never get what she wants - the phrase she's looking for is 'double fronted'...
No, they were designed for working class people who couldn't afford to buy their own home. Who prior to council housing would have been shoved in a back to back slum or tenement building with an outdoor toilet. Maybe you'd like to see us go back to that?
So much ignorance and snobbery on this thread. Both my parents grew up in council homes and I still have relatives who live in them.
My family through our history have been working class and have always rented privately..The shortage is down to generations of families that feel they alone have a divine right for such properties.
Didn't Gordon Brown say when he was P.M. that Britons should be housed ahead of immigrants, and British jobs for British workers, but he was stopped by the E.U. from carrying it out.
Instead of saying it he should have done it.
I think we can safely say Mrs Thatcher sold off more council houses than immigrants that live in the current stock. Still, Blair's open door policy added to a problem that started years back.
The latest residents of one of the rather nice 3 bed houses with gardens who moved in 2 weeks ago are Somalians, yet day after day people phone my dad, stop him in the street or in shops and ask (no plead) with him to let them know when
one of the houses are coming up for rent so they can watch out for it, he personally knows 6 families British people with local ties who put in a bid for that property and didn't get it.
So yes Immigrants are still getting housed at the expense of local people in some areas
If people of Somalian origin got a house it is because they were higher up the list than others. By law a council cannot discriminate on grounds of ethnicity; nor is there any imaginable reason why they would want to discriminate positively in such a way. (I am sure we can all think of a reason why a housing department might want to discriminate negatively).

I think you are getting confused here. Immigrants 'who haven't paid a penny into our system' (presumablyl asylum seekers, who may not, by law, work) do not get houses that people 'have been turfed out of'. They get home office properties which have been offloaded by a council as being impossible to let. People who get council housing do so by putting their names on a list; they must prove a work history that shows that they are 'customarily resident' in this country, which is likely to take some years. No one can just rock up and ask for a nice council house.
What about India, China, Nigeria, or the Caribbean? If an English person turns up there and asks for a free house, what will the authorities say?
People on the left have a funny idea about fairness?
Council houses are not free. If you want to know what benefits you will be entitled to in other countries you will have to ask on a country by country basis. many countries have no social housing at all so it will not apply.

Roma gypsies have a higher mortality rate from all causes; they live on average 12-15 years less than non-gypsies; they have a child mortality rate 300% higher. Possibly someone has thought it compassionate to try and address these issues.
Didn't Gordon Brown say when he was P.M. that Britons should be housed ahead of immigrants, and British jobs for British workers, but he was stopped by the E.U. from carrying it out.
Like Blair he signed the treaty, the traitor!
It seems as if the traitorous shitbag politiicians in Parliament have made themselves exempt from prosecution for treason (and public hanging, drawing and quartering, the penalty for treason).)
The Tories took away our council houses. Nothing at all to do with either immigrants or anyone else.
What an ignorant statement. The Tories did no such thing, they may have sold off council housing but these houses didn't just disappear. They housed people who otherwise could have never afforded to buy a house and still do so to this day.
Labour originally proposed the right to buy scheme back in the 50's. And if this scheme had been brought in by the left you can bet damn well it would be painted as a triumph for the working class man by the far left.
Which is where people who like to blame immigrants for every single problem live. The likes of the Torygraph and The Daily Mail aren't interested in the real reasons for a shortage in social housing because that was started under their beloved Thatcher's policy of selling off council houses. Yes it is also true that the last Labour government also didn't do enough to make sure more homes were being built. Despite what the right wing press and UKIP like to have people believe not that many council houses go to immigrants and many Councils have a policy of giving more points to people who have local connections.

Wasn't it The Tories that stopped local authorities from building more homes to replace the sold off stock? So it sounds more like you're the one making an ignorant statement.
I don't think immigrants should be given council housing unless they've lived and worked here for at least five years. I know its controversial but I wouldn't go and live in another country and expect to be housed by the state!
Well outside Daily Mail land immigrants generally don't get council housing with in 5 years.

I seriously doubt it would have been painted as a triumph, if Labour had gone through with the idea.
It was the worst idea in history and has lead to high rents and housing shortages.
At least if Labour did it, they might have built more houses with the proceeds of the sales.
Out of the hundred odd houses where I live, about half are let to eastern Europeans/Congolese and if I'm being completely honest, it's now a better place to live. We used to have anti social behaviour on an almost nightly basis but now it is a quiet, friendly place. So, in my area there are a lot of immigrants in council houses but from a completely selfish point of view, I hope they stay.
Rent paying council housing tenants have not only been paying up to 90% of private market values for housing, but the excess they're paying is paying down the deficit the country is facing. If anything, we should be celebrating council housing tenants, not demonising or attempting "divide and rule" against them.
If anything, the biggest benefactor of "subsidy" from taxpayers are private buy-to-let landlords who are using taxpayers money from housing benefit to make massive, easy profit.
Thank you, great post.
I am a council tenant.. I pay £110 a week for my home... this house cost about £700 to build in the 50's - I am sick of being labelled as being subsidised - and no I cannot buy it for personal and medical reasons.
