Why Are People So Rude/Nasty On The Internet?

Is it the case that people know they can get away with it while hiding behind a computer screen? They wouldn't have the guts to behave in such a way to a persons face but over the internet you can say what you like and still keep all your teeth. Do some get a bit of a thrill out of it do you reckon? Wind someone up and sit back laughing and masturbating while it all kicks off? :D

I think people are only getting ruder/nastier as time goes on. When i first began using the net you'd get the odd one but now its all the time. I'm not the least bit surprised when you hear on the news about people being victimised on facebook or twitter. It's an easy way for cowards to find a victim.

I think some people seem to forget there is still a person with feelings at the other side of the screen too. Type out or do something nasty over the net and is that somehow ok? The other person will be ok with it cos it happened over the internet? Not so really.

Thoughts?

Maybe it's just the difference in how I use the internet, but when I first started using it I went on chatrooms and message boards and people were far ruder on those than what I see on forums I use now.

I don't know, it's horrible at times. When I see such comments, I think to myself "Are you really like this in real life too?".

The internet can bring out the worst in some people.

I think you've pretty much summed it up in your first line OP - there's very little consequence to being rude to someone over the medium of a forum or a chat room. It's not just over the internet that this is the case either; years ago when I used to work in a call center people would be far nastier over the phone than they would dream of being face-to-face.

The thing is that over the internet or the phone, everyone can be six foot five and made of muscle because there is no chance that the person they are offending taking a swing at them. Prior to working in a call center, I worked in bars - where people generally should be at their worst, but for the most part I never had people losing their decorum as often as I encountered it over the phone.

Either you have a selective memory or you were incredibly lucky, but people online back then were generally the same as people today.

The only significant difference is volume. Fewer people back then, lower the volume of nasty and rude posts. More people today, higher the volume.

There's certainly a lot more people whinging about other people on the internet than there used to be. I thought facebook was designed for this sort of attention-seeking passive aggressiveness. ;-)

I honestly believe that people now are a lot ruder/nastier than when I first started using the internet in 1999.

I am part of a trading group and honestly it has opened my eyes to how some people are. I did a social experiment about a week or so ago.
I offered to send people a free item for free (I paid for the postage). I offered it to 5 people but said a trade would be nice.
Not one person took me up on the trade. One person just sent me the address to send it to, no thank you, nothing. I had one person message me trying to get the item, even though they had made it clear they didn't think much of me with previous posts.
It only cost me $6 to do but things like that really open your eyes to how people are.

No i don't have a selective memory. Like i said there was always one or two but it never seemed as bad as it is now.

    I take it that's a pop at me/the thread?

There is a difference between whinging about something and wanting to have a discussion/share thoughts on something.

Ah c'mon now. You weren't looking for a discussion at all, just to be agreed with. Same as that thread last night pitifully asking 'why some people are so horribly selfish'. :p

Please don't try and make out that you know what is going on in my head and what my intentions are when posting a thread. I think i know better than you do! That's shockingly arrogant of you.

People get a lot braver when they don't feel accountable for their actions.

I don't know what drives people to it though, I really don't see what people have to gain. Having read some of the tweets directed at Vanessa Feltz this week over the Rolf Harris case, I can't see what you have to gain by posting hurtful comments.

You're right, a lot more posters these days think it's alright to say just whatever they like, no matter how it offends and I'm not just talking about DS, some other forums like youtube are awful, just shows their level of intellect I suppose. They probably think it's hilariously funny or clever.

You should see the stick me and some others are taking in another thread on here about a well-known celebrity who was jailed last week, just for daring to have an opinion on the way it was all handled. Anyway, that's for that thread, not this one.

Yes, people can get nasty on the internet, but no more so than if we were in a TV studio having a live televised debate, they can get pretty nasty, especially if Katie Hopkins is present! I try to be respectful, but then the knives come out, and you have to act in self-defence.

You should see people on the Freeview changelog thread in the Freeview forum, where you MUSTN'T, under ANY circumstances, post something that isn't more than a note on it. They get all high and mighty if you do. I confronted them about it last week-and my posts were deleted! By them, or by the DS mods? You decide!

Also, the Big Brother forum's not for the faint-hearted either-but, regardless, I enjoy reading people's opinions about the show, and it's still the best BB forum on the internet, bar none!

    Oh get over yourself. :D

It has already been explained to you that there are now far more people online than there were in the past and that is the main reason for your perception. If anything, there are fewer posts offending people's delicate sensibilities as there is far more moderation than there used to be, not to mention the automatic censoring of words deemed unacceptable.

Well go on youtube and imdb and study some of the posts on there then and see if you still think that. Go on cam4 and watch how rude people can be in people's rooms...

And yes i am aware there are more people on the net now, i don't need it 'explained' to me thank you

Er, isn't cam4 an amateur porn site? If you're looking for instances of people misbehaving on the interspaz, it is hardly a representative example, surely? ;-)

Youtube is notorious for loonies so, again, not representative. Now that IMDb is owned by Amazon, it is heavily moderated. I think you'd be surprised if you looked at it now.

I may have just Googled it. Yes, yes it is :o:D

Ha ha! OP's made a Freudian slip there. Perhaps his point is that people were so much more polite and better behaved when requesting online pornographic performances from strangers in the past. :D

Fortunately i googled it on my phone instead of my work PC. Just had a, er, vague memory that it was (ahem) something dodgy...

I stupidly asked for advice on Entertainment Advice and Gadget threads a few years ago and got flamed for it.
I felt such a stupid mare.
Looking back though, I did ask some pretty stupid questions.
Never, ever, will I set foot on those forums again !

Its not only on t'internet that people are rude.
I put up a dividing fence between us and next door, cost me £300+ (they contributed zilch) only for their brats to continually batter it with a football and break panels on it.
Not a word from the parents, in fact they storm around and make us feel bad for ticking their little brats off when they broke the fence.

They're not so bad. There are some quite knowledgeable bods on there, in fact. Whatever you do, don't start a fight between the android and apple fanboys and you should be fine.
