This is that Cliffie track. A cringey attempt to be modern. It was Black night he went under as just to get it played and it was held in regard even!

    Here's the song in question..

Nope, don't remember that version, but I know the 1983 original by The Funkmasters.

    Ah yes, ' Clock ' ! The poor mans ' 2 Unlimited '.
Vaguely recall that they covered 70's & 80's songs in a Euro-pop stylie.
Of their 4 UK top 10s I only know of Axel F & (their biggest hit)..

... Whoomph, (There It Is) http://youtu.be/jF8WIVHwc0s

lmao The poor mans 2 Unlimited but yes your right that's what they were. I loved Clock though and wanted them to be on the big reunion as they had more top ten hits then people think and a lot more then Girl Thing. They did go down the 70's covers to much in the end and lost what they were about . The dance/techo songs they did were pretty good at the time

Yep, Clock took over where Capella left off.

Capella was another European 'techno' pop dance production who had a handful of top 10s during the first half of the 90s. :)

U + Me was their last top 10 hit in 1994 & also made #10.

    http://youtu.be/OD8nrqhorHg

Not exactly an enduring classic. ^_^

Maxx were another of this genre had two top tens which sounded similar.

oh yes Cappella were brilliant. They had several line up changes during the years and I believe they are back now with a man'wife duo . Culture Beat were also great back in the 90's as well. However none of them compared to 2 Unlimited . pure Brilliance and still love them to this day

I remember that. Again, I'm going to blame Smash Hits.

I only remember Clock's cover versions (I was 11/12 in 1996-7) and always thought they were a tribute band!

"Underwater Love" by Smoke City - one hit wonder act who was used in a Levi ad:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJXAxlj1-Z8

Sibling girl band Cleopatra had a few Top tens in 1998 (was crazy on these!!!). This a cover of "I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pebwl61RCfU

Peter Andre pre-Jordan again with a song from "The Little Mermaid" - "Kiss The Girl" made #9 in the same year:

Vonda Shepard - "Searching My Soul" - better known as the Ally McBeal theme (remember that, bet many have forgot):

The Cola Boy song is annoying but a decent dance track for its time.

Re: Cliffie - I remember he went under a pseudonym to get it playlisted and it kicked up a huge fuss.

Didn't Radio 1 have the Cliff song as record of the week? Then they found out it was Cliff & removed it right away?

    Decent song it is anyway

The lyrics and vocals on Setting Sun were also provided by Noel Gallagher.

D'you Know What I Mean was massive at the time. It was getting close to 2 years since Oasis had released the Morning Glory album so anticipation was high for Be Here Now.
D'YKWIM increased the hype because it sounded so huge. Unfortunately the rest of the album didn't live up to it.

Not sure how D'you Know What I Mean could ever be classed as unfamiliar to anyone who lived through the 90's. It sold 160,000 on it's first day alone totalling an astonishing 370,000 for it's first week.

It was a dirge of a song though. So very disappointed when I heard it. Although there is some decent stuff on Be Here Now.

Ant & Dec made the top 10 for one week back in August 1996 with

    " Better Watch Out "...

3rd Feb 1991 -Praise, Only You.
7th July 1991 -Cola Boy ,7 ways to love.
    15th sept 1991 - Sabrina Johnston, Peace.
    17th Jan 1992 - U.S.U.R.A - Open Your Mind.
2nd Feb 1992- Kicks Like A Mule - The Bouncer
    3rd March 1996 - Gat Décor - Passion.
    22 September 1996 - B.B.E - 7 days and 1 week.
    11 January 1998 - Bamboo -Bamboogie.
18th August 1998 Spacedust - Gym and Tonic.

Looking at the Wikipedia run down the above, I have no clue. Seem to remember the rest in the decade. Although there isn't a 1999 list.
I'm guessing the majority are dance music of some sort. Which I hate with a vengeance.

Edit.... just looked up Cola Boy and Sabrina Johnston on youtube, remember hearing them but didn't know who they were. Awful tunes.

I remember Sabrina Johnson''s Peace song.
I like it. Quite an upbeat r&B / dance song.

I had a look at the top ten best-sellers from every year of the 1990s ( http://www.everyhit.com/chart5.html ), and think this one out of all of them might be the most obscure:

    Oceanic - Insanity

Despite being the ninth best-seller of 1991, I have no memories of hearing this at all until 2006, by which time I'd heard every single other track on that Everyhit page. Even today it's barely played and barely mentioned by anyone - I'm not old enough to remember it from the time, but it seems to fit in with most of that rave-pop era. Perhaps it just dated too quickly in comparison to other big sellers?

Runner up on that list might be Wet Wet Wet's 'Goodnight Girl', tenth best-seller of 1992 but completely overshadowed today by their much bigger hit two years later.

    3rd March 1996 - Gat Décor - Passion..

You've said you don't like dance music which is why you don't know this but it's probably one of the most played, well known and biggest house tracks of all time and still fill;s the dance floor when it's played to this day

The 1996 remix of Gat Decor - Passion was a vocal version of the instrumental original.

    (Original instrumental of 'Passion') http://youtu.be/nGU7z2LGtV8

The vocals of House anthem ' Do You Want It Right Now ? ' by Degrees of Motion were added.

Ironic that both original tunes by Gat Decor & Degrees of Motion were in the Top 40 chart at 34 & 36 w/e May 16th 1992.

The same week that The Wedding Present managed their only UK top 10 hit with this...

#10 Come Play With Me http://youtu.be/Qe8cKsCZ6SQ

:D:D Grrr Damn you Smash Hits !! *shakes fist* ^_^

Found some more... all from the latter half of the same year..

    1997 Peter Andre - Lonely (#6)
    1997 Hanson - I Will Come To You (5)
1997 3T - (Any song by them)
1997 BabyFace - How Come, How Long (#10)
    1997 Ma$e - Feel So Good (#10)
    1997 U2 - Please (#7)
    1997 Cast - Live The Dream (#7)
    1997 Mary J Blige - Everything (#6)
    1997 Foxy Brown - I'll Be (#9)

Ironic that nearly everyone's familiar with Peter Andre's 'Mysterious Girl' which made #2 in 96, but hardly anyone (who wasn't an avid Smash Hits reader ;-) ) recalls the two follow-ups 'Flava' & 'I Feel You' which both made #1.

They weren't cheesy enough to remember. Also people remember him showing off his pecs in the video for Mysterious Girl.

    ^^ Very true ^^

On the subject of cheesy 90's songs.. who on earth bought this ?!

    http://youtu.be/EFpAD36d48o :o

Somehow spent three weeks in the top five late 1992.. despite getting virtually no radio airplay... apart from on the R1 chart rundown.

WWE/WWF was big news back then.
