Bamboozle was great I used to play it every Sunday. There was also an agony aunt section I used to read for young teens. It seems like another lifetime with the Internet and smartphones now a days.

My dad used to book all our holidays through teletext as well for great prices.

You ve got me thinking Jurrasic........

I could buy a smartphone , charge it up and just use it on my internet
    wi fi !

Just the initial outlay for the smartphone....... then .... as long as Im in range of my
wi fi I can get on the net via smartphone

Ive got a tablet about 3 years old,
I find I go on it and just get frustrated as stuff does nt load
    and its a waiting game

After 40 mins on there trying to find out the football scores Im frustrated and angry

maybe a smartphone is the answer ?

Any advice as to which smartphone to go for ?

(if you re sure Ill be able to use it for free
and log into my internet wi fi )

I've got a Motorola Moto G 4G on Tesco PAYG, but it's probably best to ask on the Mobile Phones forum.

As long as it's wifi enabled, you will be able to use it to access the internet on your home wifi at no extra cost.

Teletext was there, a free and useful service

Im on the internet but firing up my desktop is a 5 to 10 min wait

with teletext you turned on the tv , pressed a button and bingo

If your pc's taking that long - do you defragment it regularly? Do you also use a free cleaner like CCleaner? We have a 5 year old laptop and it can be fired up in under 2 mins. - using CCleaner and defragmenting with Defraggler (free) made a difference to our machine, plus keeping an eye on programmes you're not using, clearing out files and documents that are not in use, backing stuff up you don't access regularly (and other stuff too) onto a USB stick or external hard drive - all these things help, and maybe your internet speed is slow(er)? You might see it a bit slower if you are going on between 7 & 8pm and not on fast/fibre broadband.

BTW I am not being a smart ar5e, I am not technical at all - all picked up from friends and colleagues over the years!

Does anyone still use the digital replacement of teletext? I just had to check whether it was still there because never looked at it for a year or so whereas I would be using teletext regularly prior to DSO.

I do the defrag pre scan and a notice comes up

theres not enough space on your hard drive to do a defrag !

    so I give up .

But .... Ive never been into mobile phones but now Juraccic has
got me into the idea of having a smart phone and getting onto the
internet with my current wi fi

I could even use it in the garden and get info on the net

But any advice as to which model to go for ?

(hopefully this side of £100 )

The only time I really use it nowadays is whenever I visit my parents (they don't have internet access) and the only reason they use it is to check the lottery results.

I just pull my laptop off the table in front of me and open it. I'm doing that now in fact. I can still see the TV over the top of the screen.

This activity is called Market trading, TV, laptop and even phone. Playing poker, sky movies and maybe Facebook on the phone.

I surf the net on a big LCD TV via a desk top
    and hdmi cable.

I guess the cable is turning it into a smart TV !

Then you need to get rid of all those programs you don't use or need!

Yes that's the big part of the problem why the pc is so slow in starting up - you need to save files externally and as Bandspread says clear out stuff. Then you will be able to defrag on a regular basis (once a week) and get CCleaner installed (can download free in seconds). The longer you don't clear stuff out and defrag then your pc will be even slower than it is now! :(

Fair enough going for a smartphone with wi-fi but you have paid good money for a relatively recently bought pc - you're not getting the best use out of it and the remedy to that problem is quite straightforward.

I have an Archos 50b purchased from QVC as a Todays Special Value. It's not the worlds greatest phone, but has a decent bright 5" screen happily runs apps such as Facebook, Yahoo mail, Daily Mail, Twitter, BBC News and YouTube (you get the idea)
Sound quality is quite good from the tiny rear speaker and video playback is quite smooth, it only seems to jitter if you're loading from a webpage full of adverts and other clutter, but then so did my old Galaxy S2! (in fact my laptop does the same thing)

Text is also quiet easy to read and you can spend an hour reading the newspaper apps with no eye strain.

I was a little hesitant at first but the many reviews I read basically (and correctly) point out it's built to a price point (reviewed at £180) I paid £104 including p&p

It's never going to be the latest iPhone or Samsung Galaxy, but if you can find it for around £100 - £120 I don't think you'll go far wrong.

QVC currently sell it for £122 http://www.qvcuk.com/Archos-Platinum-50b-Android-5.0-Smartphone-with-Accessories.product.505791.html?cm_sp=VIEWPOSITION-_-2-_-505791

But no doubt shopping around online will find it cheaper.

The cameras wont exactly capture 'stunning' quality pictures or video but at at price point it's to be expected and the battery will happily last all day with a mixture or 3G and Wifi usage.

Remember the even better days of black and white TV? The monochrome pictures, that knob on the side which you had to turn to change channel. There only being two channels, none of that BBC2 in colour muck! Reg Varney, Arthur Negus, Robin Day...

    Bring back black and white!

Thanks for the link and advice zero

I ve got an account with e buyer but get annoyed when they e mail me
and I cant e mail them back

I ve got an account with QVC and buying with them is easy
    via phone etc
    I might take your advice

I did have about 100 gig free space on my comp about 3 weeks ago
and should have thought of doing a defrag then
Im down to about 45 gig now so thats prob not enough .

Im saying its 10 mins to boot up, but for the last 3 months I ve
    started a new system
    I hit........... turn off computor
    a window comes up

    restart
    turn off
    stand by

I always used to hit the turn off button .... it used to take an age just to
    turn off !

But now I hit the standby button........... it cuts off in about 10 secs

then next day I turn on and the comp is there in seconds, no booting up .

Since doing this system I seem to be in calmer waters with my comp
    ( f fox browser used to crash a lot etc ... in the old days }

Im on a 7 ? year old desk top comp with XP but since turning off this
way I seem to be doing OK ( touch wood )

It has been argued before but teletext did a number of things that its supposed replacement cannot do and was much more convenient to use.

I still use the BBCi red button text service at times for news and weather. Also football scores.
I used to also use the old Teletext service at times to.
TV guide on BBCi Text and Teletext used to be good but there is really no need for a TV guide service on BBCi text or that as you can use the EPG, TV magazine or the Youview or Sky/Virgin media apps.
