Be sensible and realistic and drop the sarcasm. It isn't impressive. You know as well as I do that Janice Long and Lynn Parsons are never selected to do daytime cover. Parsons occasionally covers Sarah Kennedy, but that's on an early morning slot.
Nowadays Radio 2 chooses celebrities to do most of the daytime cover hence why we often hear Liza Tarbuck, Jodie Prenger, Graham Norton, Richard Madeley or Fern Britten.
Janey Lee Grace and Tim Smith often go on leave at the same time as Steve Wright because they're a team.
I find it ironic that Steve Wright is in need of a well-deserved break. How much time off has he had off this year already?!

I was being serious. Perhaps Radio 2 could have a rethink and put another established female radio presenter like Janice or Lynne on alongside Chris Tarrant. That's my opinion.
Incidentally, there's nothing "ironic" about someone taking the time off that they are entitled to as per their contract.

I wholeheartedly agree with you that Janice Long and Lynn Parsons should be used as daytime cover but we both know that is very unlikely to happen.
Back in the good old Jim Moir days presenters like Alex Lester used to cover Terry Wogan, Ken Bruce, Janice Long and Johnnie Walker. Lynn Parsons sat in for Ken Bruce and Johnnie Walker. Janice Long used to sit in for Richard Allinson on Saturday afternoons. And Richard Allinson sat in for Terry Wogan, Ken Bruce, Steve Wright, Johnnie Walker and Ed Stewart.
Nowadays unless you're of a celebrity status you won't be asked to cover daytime presenters.
Moving back to Steve Wright, the BBC have made him sound so hard done by.
Steve Wright ought to become a school teacher
Maybe Steve Wright could teach all the over paid tv celebrities that seem to be clogging up R2 these days how to operate the radio desk instead of having someone tech opping for them! - Jesus, it ain't that f***ing difficult!!

What does it matter? they are there because of their talent as broadcasters not to show how slick they can be at comming off the back of a jingle.
I think Radio 2 tec guys like to have to right people to drive the desks. I always used to hear Ken Bruce had trouble every Monday after the weekend with the desks being tampered with buttons and vaders stickers being peeled off etc... At the end of the day it's expenses equipment, and this is probarly why a lot don't drive them.

Ken Bruce has to do some work for a change. My heart bleeds for him.
One week wasn't his fault. Steve has a full time contract with the station and entitied to holidays.
Ahh, but full time is open to interpretation.
For example, a regular BBC employee will get 25 days paid holiday per year plus Bank Holidays (or time off in lieu of holiday working).
Steve Wright - though full time - will have a contract negotiated by him or his agent committing him to a minimum number of shows per year. Like many presenters, he'll negotiate enough to take into account time off for himself, time for the family and perhaps a bit extra here and there.
However, there is a misconception among listeners that some high profile presenters are "never there" because - statistically - they'll be seen/heard to be taking more time off than some others. And the higher profile the presenter the more obvious this will be - because the BBC Press Office will stick out a story telling everyone who's covering.
To give you a comparative example, did the BBC publicise the fact that Alex Lester is off for a few weeks and Tim Smith is sitting in?

Alex only takes 4 weeks holiday a year what I gather? I think he may take the odd week over Christmas? Ken does take most of the school holidays off. Guessing some are not paid for some presenters. It may look a lot, but it could add upto far less.
it wouldn't surprise me if this stint goes well covering for Steve he might return to breakfast radio as a stand in for chris evans when he goes on holiday
Tarrant is good on both TV & Radio. He did 20 years at Capital Radio and was the winning formula for the station. Some have it and some havn't.
That may well be the case in his 80s and 90s heyday, but his shows on Capital in the noughties were lagging, such as the revamp in around 2003 when Becky Jago joined as his sidekick.
I think at that time Park had left, so didn't have that support structure in there to maintain the quality.

No thanks. It's bad enough Graham Norton is tipped as Jonathan Ross's successor.
Mike Osman is another berk I don't want to hear on Radio 2

A lot of people outside London proberbly think that.
There's the start of a rumour!
I think he takes as much time off like the rest now. It looks a lot. Ken Bruce takes all school holidays off, except 6/7 weeks in the summer.

I miss the old days when they did that at the old Radio 1.
Jonathan Ross cannot drive the desk but has been hosting the same popular show on Radio 2 for the past 11 years.

If a female co-host will be introduced I really cannot think of anyone off the top of my head.[/QUOTE]
Kara Noble??
Yes, she could stand in for Sally Boazman on the traffic & travel reports, perhaps doing them live from the Flying Eye!
I'm sure Tarrant would love that, especially if they let him refuel the plane personally before it set off with Kara Nobel on board.
You don't know that, Alex. I mean, who would have thought Graham Norton would end up on Radio 2?
