Russia will immediately use a nuclear weapon if it considers that its territory is threatened and the threat does not have to involve an invasion of Russian land. That is stated clearly and publicly. To backtrack is not politically viable.
The use by Ukraine of increased weaponry and/or troops supplied by the United States and Britain is likely to be regarded as such a threat. The nuclear option would be used against Ukraine first. I believe that the policy Obama, McCain, Cameron and Merkel are pursuing, if it is continued, will ensure that the Christmas of 2013 was our last.

Incidentally, there is an alternative way. It involves revolution - which of course can only be justifiable in extreme situations. I would say that those who have been elected are moving on this matter towards the point of extreme.
A part of their remit is to keep their citizens safe and they are pursuing an objective that is doing the opposite. Egotistically and pig-headedly in the case of many including the US President, the EU and British Government Ministers. And deliberately in the case of McCain for reasons linked to his old age and a disturbed psychology.
