Labour's Emily Thornberry quits over tweet
The tweet was posted on polling day in Rochester

Labour's Emily Thornberry has resigned from the Labour front bench over a tweet she sent during the Rochester and Strood by-election campaign.

The shadow attorney general previously apologised for the tweet, which showed a terraced house with three England flags, and a white van parked outside.

Alongside the picture, she wrote: "Image from Rochester".

She said she had not meant to cause offence, but Labour backbencher John Mann accused her of "snobbery".

Polls have closed in the by-election, which was triggered when Conservative MP Mark Reckless defected to the UK Independence Party and resigned his seat to seek re-election for UKIP.

    As that famous poem goes:

If you can tweet with triumph in Rochester

    You'll be a champagne socialist from Islington.:D

Leaving London must have been quite traumatic for her. I hope someone has some champagne on ice and tomorrow's edition of the Guardian waiting for her.

I can't believe that Emily Thornberry has had to resign over that twitpic.

I mean, imagine if any other MP had to resign because of ignorance. There'd be very few MPs left in Westminster. :p

And it just goes to show how ridiculously politically correct our country has become, all thanks to LibLabCon. And I have a feeling it's going to get a whole lot worse for everybody. :(

I live in Islington (North, which is Jeremy Corbyn's constituency; Emily Thornberry is the MP for Islington South) and I can't move for Champagne Socialists here ! The so-called "metropolitain elite" are buying up all the property as it gentryfies further to the extremities of the borough.

Don't get me wrong, the upmarket environment that has mushroomed in recent years is very nice most of the time, but I dislike the Champagne Socialists that seem to genuinely believe that they're really living amongst the disadvantaged and are improving the country for them, when in reality what they're doing is moving them out to improve their own lives !

I'm not a Socialist, but I wish Champagne Socialists would just be honest with themselves and come out of the closet as Conservatives. There's nothing wrong with doing that and they might actually learn something about themselves.

At least Jeremy Corbyn is a real Socialist who has principles. Emily Thornberry is a Blair-style Labourite who wants Socialism for her supporters just as long as she doesn't have to partake.

So maybe UKIP's Godfrey Bloom had a point when he resigned earlier this year?

She's seen the error of her ways. Stick a tenner on her defecting to UKIP in the moring and you'll be quids in.

We all suspect that many politicians are out of touch, but it's one thing to suspect this and another to have evidence there for everyone to see.

If it turns out that the guy who owns the flags is very right wing in his views, then Ed Miliband and all those diving in to have a go at her really will have egg on their faces and thats me putting it very mildly.

Yes - just watch the outrage from the luvvies in Camden and Islington about the mansion tax. It's going to cause a humanitarian crisis for people who own homes worth millions apparently.

They love socialism and the NHS - as long as someone else pays for it!:D They also love poor people - as long as they don't dare move to the snooty conservation areas where they live.

I know. Shocking isn't it? They'll all have to move into social housing. The social housing and its tenants that are being eradicated from both those boroughs and relocated to the provinces. Nevermind, they can then exercise their Right to Buy (that they don't agree with) and get back on the property ladder again.

Hey, wait a minute! I live in a conservation area. Very nice it is too. A ground floor flat converted from an Edwardian town house all owned by a Housing Association. A lot of the surrounding property is owned by these people and I rub shoulders with them everyday. Fortunately, Emily Thornberry isn't one them.

Boris is inherently out of touch, whereas Emily seems to have chosen to become out of touch.

I think this tweet-pic sacking/resignation story is one gigantic over reaction from Labour.

    The uproar is pathetic.

I haven't seen the picture itself but from what I can gather it's a picture of a house in Rochester covered in large St George's flags with a white van on the drive taken on the day of the by election.

If I was a Labour MP in Rochester today looking at that house I'd be thinking to myself "if ever we needed an indicator that the working class vote is turning to UKIP that image says it all."

That's not a sneer, it's not snobbery on her part or any of that nonsense because let's face it, if there was a local election today round my neck of the woods and a house was so decorated I'd probably associate that image with someone proclaiming their support for UKIP rather than thinking "there lives a keen England footy fan or something to that extent"

The reaction this tweet has generated (all of which is opinion based as opposed to factual and rife with political opportunism) makes me wanna weep at times.

People need to get a grip

Whilst I agree with you that this is all over the top, I'm afraid I cannot agree with your comments in BIB above.

Whenever I see an England flag draped from windows I never think 'oh they must be UKIP'. Why would I?

Anyway, your comments don't seem to be true as the Telegraph has interviewed the man who lives at the house in question, and this is what he has to say about it all:

22.30: EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Man who lives at house in Thornberry tweet hits back

Chris Hope, the Telegraph's senior political correspondent currently in Rochester, tracked down the house tweeted about by Ms Thornberry - who has just resigned - earlier today. Dan Ware criticised the (now former) Labour frontbencher about her comments and also posed for a picture.

Chris writes: Mr Ware, 36, a father of four who works in the motor trade and property maintenance, said the flags had been on his house since the World Cup.

He said that he had voted Conservative at the 2010 election but "I don't know why", and had no idea there was a by-election in Rochester and Strood that evening.
Asked about how he felt about Miss Thornberry's Tweet, he said: "She is a snob - what has she got a three storey townhouse in Islington?"

Mr Ware who has lived in Rochester for 15 years said he was upset that his van's licence plate had been put on the internet, saying it was a "privacy thing".
He said: "The picture shouldn't be took. She should ask first because the registration number is in the picture.

"I will continue to fly the flags - I don't care who it pisses off. I know there is a lot of ethnic minorities that don't like it. They have been up since the World Cup."
He said he did not like Labour's views, but was not political.

Mr Ware voted Tory at the last GE. he wasn't aware that there was a by-election going on today, and his England flags were put up for the World Cup and have been there ever since.

regardless of the tweet she wasnt very good.

her tweet however was spot on, it represented the typical house of the far right / ukip supporters .. and the owner looks like a typical edl/bnp-er to be fair

correction: "He was not aware there was a byelection, but voted Conservative at the last general election and has never voted Labour."

I think we might live in different parts of the country. :D Up here England flags are more to do with football than anything else.

    Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to believe that anyone seeing a house covered in England flags on a day of a local election might conclude the homeowner was a UKIP supporter.

That's infintely more believable than the idea that someone wouldn't know that a much publicised local election was happening and that the flags were remnants of a football competition that finished six months ago that England played crap in.

I also struggle to believe that a bloke who is supposedly so ignornat of politics would have the first clue who Emily Thornberry is let alone be able to pass a comment about Islington. Isn't that a bit coincidental that he knew which constituency she represents?

I'm keen on politics and I didn't have the foggiest which area she represents so I'm inclined to think his comments about her flat are the result of him being fed a line specifically phrased to trigger the response he gave. Either that or he's psychic.
