Lexi the dog is most definitely her owner’s best friend after saving him from choking to death on a pickled onion.

The 18-month-old Labrador performed a canine version of the Heimlich maneuvre – jumping on 67-year-old Alan Spencer’s back – to free his airwaves after minutes of agony.

Mr Spencer, from Withernsea in East Yorkshire, who lives alone had been tucking into a dinner of crisp breads gherkin and picked onions when the worst happened.

He said of his ordeal: ‘I felt myself going completely. I felt the life going out of me.

‘I couldn’t get a breathe in. It was scary – it had been maybe I guess three or four minutes without a breathe.

‘I fell to the floor and I was fighting and fighting for air and to get to the door.’

The former Club entertainer described how Lexi saved the day: ‘All of a sudden out of the blue I felt this almighty crash on my back and it was Lexi.

‘She had just jumped straight up in the air and landed right in the middle of my back.

‘All of a sudden the piece of onion shot out of my mouth and I could breathe again.’

Mr Spencer admitted to suffering from a bad back and pain in his throat for a few days but was left otherwise unharmed.

One unexpected result of his pickled incident was that whenever he makes a ‘slight cough now Lexi turns her head quickly.’

The question is now – would a pet cat do the same for its owner?
Assuming this isn't an April Fools' story it sounds remarkably similar to something that happened eight years ago in Maryland when a golden retriever jumped on his owner to dislodge a piece of apple she was choking on.
