I'm not sure how this would stand from an infection control point of view; rinsing an item containing body fluids in a handbasin used by others sounds gross. Shouldn't the cup be disinfected each time? Helpful to the environment it may be, but that seems its only benefit.
What about all the money you'd be spending on soaps, disinfectants etc??? I dont like the sound of those mooncups AT ALL  Plus they sound very unhygenic
Blimey, there's me a mother of 5 aged 38 and I've never heard of Mooncups! Where have I been? I've had the contraceptive injection for 3 years thus no periods but I thought I knew all there was to know about the monthly's! They say you learn something every day and I certainly have today. To all you ladies out there who are having problems you have my sympathy. Us women have a lot to put up with.

Not at all they are simple. I rinse mine out with water in the day you are probably only going to have to empty it once or twice when you arent in the house. Then when I'm home at night I boil it in water for a couple of mins so thats once a day I might stick a bit of milton in it too and then rinse it out. Then when I finish my period I give it a really good boil and sterilise it and put it in its bag for the next time.
I bought a bottle of milton for about £1 when I first bought my mooncup Ive had it ages now and am only just finishing that bottle oh and if I boil it on the stove I use an old saucepan or if I do it in hot water I have a measuring jug that also cost £1. You can use sterilising tablets instead I think some of the other girls have said but they are dirt cheap too.
Not had any kind of infection since I had it, if anything I've been far better down there (bet you wanted to know that) because it hasn't dried me out like tampons do and you don't get that icky smell (you always get a slight smell even if you change your towels really regularly) or sit in your own mess like you do with towels (sorry lads).

You don't have any periods at all with that? Is that not bad for you?
Think I'll just sit on the loo for a week, wait for it all to drop out
I was terrified about using tampons when I first started my periods, didn't use them for a few months at least, as much as I hated towels, and the first time I tried to use them, aged about 13 or so, I was pretty nervous but it was as easy as anything. I had to be firm, obviously, but no shoving or twisting involved. My best friend had a terrible experience, and to this day finds it completely impossible whereas I've always found it fine, although I prefer using towels as I have an utterly feeble short term memory, and being completely disaster-prone have had quite a few close calls. It must be something to do with the anatomy, although what I just don't know.

According to my doctor it doesn't cause any problems. It can take up to a year for your periods to get back to normal after you stop having the injections but as I'm nearing 40 and won't be having anymore babies it's perfect for me. I have to say a period free life is very welcome. It's as effective as the pill and apparently is a very popular form of contraception. Although not for everyone it suits me fine.
I'm torn between 'Yuk' and 'Wow' with the mooncups. And the name really puts me off. Sounds very hippy, astrology, earth mothery. Which is fine if you're a hippy earth mother into astrology. Can't imagine what my friends would say (once they'd stopped laughing) if I said I used 'mooncups'. San-cup or eco-san would be better. Even so, would still be yuk/wow.
Don't get me wrong I'm into the environmental aspect of it as much as anyone else but the mooncup art stuff I read about nearly put me off it completely. Yukko yuk yuk
Another possibility - I was always unable to use tampons as a teenager, and when I made a visit to family Planning I discovered why - I'd got a really thick hymen. I had to go into hospital and have it cut under anaesthetic - and the waiting list was TWO YEARS!
Mr M, bless him, waited for me all that time! O got a good 'un there!
Anyway - if the problem persists, OP, it might be worth getting checked by your GP.
It was a blimmin' good job I went to family planning before we tried doing the Big Jiggy - I think we might have been traumatised for life!!!!!!!
No probs with tampons now, btw - leg up on the bath and aim for the base of your spine!

I found it wonderful - though the rubbish about taking ages to regain fertility for me was just that... I never got round to getting my next injection and two months later was pregnant again
I'd advise anyone having them to make sure they stick to their appointments but other than that they are wonderful - I'm going for the implantnext which apparently works on the same hormones but lasts for about three years...
I just think that's exactly what I'd do if I had to do that!
I bet your poor boyfriend/hubby feels so chuffed about you thinking about members other than his when you do it..
Well thankfully I'm single right now. But honestly, it does work. When thinking of solutions it just came to mind as a slightly more pleasant way of tackling it, seems obvious when you think of it really.

Hi! I've got a problem that's bugging me, and I'd really appreciate some advice - I'm having BIG trouble trying to insert tampons! I've tried and tried for a good few months now, and I just can't get the sodding things in! I'm desperate to use tampons as I hate towels, so if any of you girlies on here can give me some tips I'd be really grateful! Thanks!
Everyone's advice is good, I would add don't do it right after the shower or you'll be too dry and it will really hurt. Use some lube or something, put one foot on the W.C. and see if that doesn't aid?
Sorry, I've never been good with them either. I'm really little, I have to get the teen-sized ones, and even then the brands without the applicators they just make it worse for me.
But try different brands, see if you can find one that works for you. The reason there are so many different brands out there are because women's bodies are so very different!!

(No, seriously, it actually does work. Helps with the relaxation aspect, and the lubrication aspect )

Perhaps I shouldn't have sad that.

This may require it's own thread
