Is Bi Polar Linked To Genius?

Hello,
Not everyone with bi polar has gifts but so many do. Can a case be made to say that bi polar can mean creative genius.
The depths of depression lead to new ways of thinking and the highs lead to new ways of expression.
Many people with Bi Polar are also famous geniuses.
What do others think?

    I think if you're a genius it's not because you're bi polar, it's just that you're a genius.

They were geniuses who happened to have bi-polar.

Christopher Hitchens said that many great writers "did some of their finest work when blotto, smashed, polluted, shitfaced, squiffy, whiffled, and three sheets to the wind". This is probably reasonably accurate and can likely extend to all other creative mediums. Look at the big rock bands of the 70's and 80's. Widely revered as being the greatest of all time, yet their members had collosal drug habits.

I don't think Bi-Polar exclusively equates to being more creative, but I think various states of altered mind can bring out higher levels of creativity than that of the average person.

Bi-polar is probably linked to genius in the same way that not being bi-polar is linked to genius or that smoking a pipe is linked to genius.

i.e. the fact that there are some instances where it's true doesn't mean that one causes the other.

Creativity can be a useful outlet for people with a mental illness, but I doubt their illness makes makes them extra talented.

I don't think the OP is suggesting that being bipolar will mean the person is also a genius.

But it would be interesting to find out if there are a higher number of geniuses with bipolar than those without.

I'd say genius and being further along the autistic spectrum are more likely to be linked.

I think we should get to see a verifiable, reliable link from the OP to some decent medical statistics before passing comment.

    Any link is tenuous

My son is autistic and I am often asked if he is a savant (he's not)

You can find links if you look for them
