what do i need to update on a new computer?

just got myself a shiny new mx17 alienware, and i love it.

i will only be using it for gamimg, and will not load anything else onto the the lap top, like videos, photos, miscellaneous downloads, so i dont clog it up.

i have updated the nvidia graphics card, and have automatic updates installed. i think it already has directx11,

so is there anything else i need to download or upgrade ou install?

If you haven't already done so, make some backup media to allow recovery of the PC should something goes wrong.

Other usual suspects that need updating would be Java, Acrobat reader, flash and shockwave players, other browsers like Chrome or Firefox etc.

Windows Updates will normally take care of themselves depending on your settings/preferences.
For other things like Java/browser /Flash etc the easiest way is this
https://browsercheck.qualys.com/
or there's an online scanner here

I wouldn't install flash or java or anything like that on a pure gaming machine. Its only something else that needs to be kept up to date.

When you have finished Updates and setting up, but before filling the hard disk too much, make a System Image to another 3xDVDs (or external HDD).

And also make a W7 Repair CD/DVD.

(Start Search Backup and Restore Center)

Regular Images, keeping the first, are a good idea if you can.

Some games use them, some don't. If a game needs one or other of them then it will usually either install it, or tell you to do so. Likewise Apple QuickTime although I get the impression (could be wrong) that is hardly ever used these days.

Google Chrome and IE10 have Adobe Flash Player built-in and kept up-to-date as part of the browser's own updating system.

Many browser-based casual games use Flash.

You might also possibly come across Silverlight, which is Microsoft's attempt at a rival for Flash. It's kept up-to-date by the same Microsoft Update system that handles operating system patches.

Despite the similarity in their names, Java and JavaScript are two very different programming languages. I think browsers have provision for JavaScript built-in.
