Went to see Quantum of Solace again with a friend last night.

Like me he thought it was brilliant.

& like me he's also a huge fan of OHMSS.

Which has got me thinking if there's a direct correlation.

Most of the Quantum of Solace hatas on here have firmly nailed their colours to the Moore/Brosnan mast.

Whereas fans of an overtly masculine Bond in the style of Connery, Lazenby & Dalton dig the current incarnation.

Not a bad Stereotype to go for.

I certainly didn't mind Brosnan (whatever faults there was with his era it wasn't him IMO) and Moore had his moments.

But my top 3 Bonds are Connery, Craig and Dalton (Lazenby I can never make my mind up probably due to him being a model not an actor - strangely enough whenever I read one of the Fleming novels I always imagine Bond looking like Lazenby though) so I can fully see your logic.

OHMSS had one massive redeeming feature that QoS didn't have - it was based on a James Bond novel written by Ian Fleming. Which none of the last dozen or so Bond movies except for Casino Royale have had the advantage of. In fact, I would say that OHMSS (along with From Russia With Love) are the two movies which follow the novels that they are based upon the closest.

OHMSS had one reason for failing (at the time of its release) - Sean Connery wasn't playing Bond. That's why Diamonds Are Forever succeeded where OHMSS failed, even though it's a piss poor movie. Sean was back!

Roger Moore, even though he is ridiculed now, had the advantage in appearing in some of the best (and certainly best remembered) Bond movies - The Spy Who Loved Me far and away above the others. Yes, he made some dross - Moonraker and A View To A Kill in particular. But a lot of people still look upon Roger Moore with affection because to them he is James Bond. He was James Bond when they first started watching Bond films (certainly was for me, The Man With The Golden Gun was the first Bond film I saw at the cinema, even though I had seen From Russia With Love on telly a year earlier). Live And Let Die, The Man With The Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only and even Octopussy have all got their moments.

If you were to do a big survey to find out people's favourite Bond movie, I would think that The Spy Who Loved Me, Goldfinger, Casino Royale and (maybe) Goldeneye would top that list. Nothing wrong with a lot of the others, and a lot of people would choose something other than one of those four, but I don't think any other film would disrupt those four from the top four slots. Those four are also probably the four most memorable for somebody who isn't a massive Bond fan.

Octopussy certainly has the best stunt work in any Bond film.

The villain/henchman combo are also amongst the best in franchise history.

& I'm not totally averse to the Moore era.

The Spy Who Loved Me & Live & Let Die are both corkers.

Only The Man With The Golden Gun (Chris Lee honourably excepted) & Moonraker plumb the depths of the Brosnan years.

    - The Spy Who Loved Me far and away above the others.

    Very overrated.

Trying to destroy the world then create a new underwater version? Do me a favour! Moore does have his moments in it though.

Octopussy is good for the wrong reasons. - If it wasn't a Bond film it would have been a damn good spoof.

Man With the Golden Gun is carried completly by Christopher Lee (god knows what that film would be like without him)

A View to a Kill a piss poor Goldfinger remake. Somehow manages to waste Christopher Walken too.

The less said about Moonraker the better.

All 5 of the above are far worse than the first three films of the Brosnan era.

Live and Let Die, and For Your Eyes Only (a very underrated film) are the only films from Moore's era which are any good.

I'd disagree with that - I love the SC/TD Bond, and yet didn't respond to QoS - I thought it was very poorly plotted and it deserved better as Casino Royale had been a brilliant return to form after the tripe of the Brosnan years. Ths is probably because there's no more books to base the films on, and as someone has mentioned above, films like OHMSS and FRWL work so well because they're closely based on the books. I don't see how they're going to get round this, other than by really investing in a good storyline. I think they rushed into doing QoS because of the success of Casino Royale - they should take time so that the next one has a finely crafted story as well as great action sequences.

I'd add my disagreement about Moore appearing in some of the best Bonds except I see it's been ably done already :D. FYEO is my favourite Moore film, and it holds up well against the better Dalton/Connery films. And even though it's sh*te, I have a real soft spot for TMWTGG as it was my favourite as a kid. The rest though...
