    Just after breakfast is probably the best time. Then he will have plenty of time to get his revenge and get ready to go out.

    I would say to go ahead with it as he did it to you on your birthday. Certainly not in a restaurant though, I'm sure the owners would not want that sort of thing going on. As for the clothes issue I would not do it if the clothes are going to be ruined as he may be upset and you don't want that on a special birthday.
