Getting a bit pissed off now, even though it's not a regular night occurrence of this but it's now the 2nd time in 2 months I've had to listen to crap rapping music til gone 4am. You could hear it outside as the window was wide open and could be heard on the corridor and floor below with me getting the worst of it

I wanted to phone the police but not sure if they would do anything. I'm am not well and haven't been for years and I cannot face confronting them as it would kick off a panic attack most likely.

What do I do? I'm thinking going to the council over it and the EHO quietly and hope the bastards get a telling off. I don't know where the landlord is but i know his name and lives in a different area.

I haven't had much sleep last night and today I feel crap

Complain to your local council or contact the police on the non emergency number, And keep a record of dates and times it is happening

Perhaps if you speak to the other residents and they find the music upsetting too, one of them would be willing to approach the noisy resident in a non-confrontational way. You can as suggested 'phone Environmental Health and ask them but as the music is infrequent I doubt this would be of much help. They'll just mail you a sheet so you can keep a record of dates and times and a brochure.

Probably contacting the landlord would be your best course of action. There's been quite a few threads about this type of disturbance and maybe one or more of them would offer a solution.

Open your door. Go to her door. Knock door. Tell her, don't ask her, tell her to turn it down or stop it.

Tell her you WILL report her to the local Council and your housing association. (And make sure you do, each time).

The girl underneath me is shit scared of me now because she pissed me off one time too many at gone midnight....and she knows I get up for work at 4am.

I simply told her in a very stern and loud voice, "Shut the fcuk up!"

I complained to the council the following day. This I have done 3 times so far, and I will continue to do it, and continue to tell her in a very stern and loud voice, "Shut the fcuk up!" should she feel the need to share her music, until the day I see her being kicked out by an eviction notice.

Good luck with your selfish neighbour.

    If you dont like confrontation
write in big letters on a piece of paper

Music and disturbance late at night is annoying to residents that live here
    Respect for others costs nothing!!!

stick it on her front door with tape or blutak, its worked for me a couple of times,if they ignore it,then you know that you are dealing with scum,if they take note and change, everybody wins

Apparently the police come out if it's after 11 pm or midnight in some areas - and not in others. You can only try them next time it happens, and see whether they come out or not.

Record it. Our nightmare neighbours were playing music so loud last week it sounded like it was in our house. My son video'd it on his phone and it's really good footage. Just have to keep doing it til you get enough for the council or landlord to be able to evict.

Environmental Health can come out with specialist recording equipment too but the difficulty is if it is a fairly rare occurence and not predictable when it's going to happen, you may not have it long enough to get evidence.

Beyond that it depends if they are social housing, private tenants or homeowners too. EH can confiscate the equipment, apparently but again it seems patchy - different in different areas.

I'm going to try this for evidence then they can't say they haven't done it.

What does that have to do with anything?

Its really depressing when you have a neighbour who is anti social. Next door's dog barks all the time and howls when she goes out. She is in and out of hospital all the time now, as she is in her 90s. So the dog howls day and night for weeks on end. Its very depressing. Cant last much longer though as the hospital stays are getting more frequent. So hopefully the poor dog will get re-homed with someone who knows about dogs and how to look after them.

I dont wish her ill by saying that, just a fact that she old and getting more frail.

I'm not sure if your neighbour is renting or is an owner. It could be worth contacting the managing agents of the freehold to tell them of the problem. They could contact the leaseholders/tenants.

I agree with this - if she don't oblige, at least she cannot use the excuse that she didn't know it was bothering anyone and you have proof that she has ignored the notice.

Some good advice here too, I've watched a couple of those 'extreme neighbours' shows where the aggrieved neighbour did this and it was the best piece of evidence they had to prove their side of the dispute.
Good luck OP, I've dealt with noisy neighbours in the past, I can empathise that their ignorance can be as annoying as the noise itself.

Try posting a dead mouse through the letterbox with a complaint note attached to it. ;)

you have to at least let her know that she is causing a disturbance. That way,if things escalate, she can never say she had no idea what disturbance she was causing.
Yes,I know, people should know better late at night, but some people really are stupid.
I have never lived in a flat that was so quiet that I forgot it was a flat and not a detached house,it's quite amazing how others do.

Recently i had a situation with the guy next door about night music - I live in 201 - he lives in 202 - He had no idea about his noise, 203 and 201(me) are so quiet,so he thought the walls were a lot thicker, because he could never hear us.

I sympathise with you. I have lived in a flat for nearly 3 years and it's been a nightmare. Flats are ok if you have good neighbours. I have the same problem. My neighbour next door plays music until 3am and she slams doors too. My other neighbour did complain to the local authority on several occasions but they did nothing. The council said the noise wasn't constant. What makes it worse is that the noisy neighbour owns her flat. You can approach noisy neighbours but expect some to make your life a living hell. Me and my OH want complain because we don't want trouble. The police have called to her flat quite often but she's still noisy. What can we do?? I think moving is the only option!!!

Can't you speak to your landlord about it? They may have more clout. Otherwise, moving is an option.

Last week it was hard rapping bass beat music, 3 days ago just your normal dance type of music. Don't mind her having music on but not to the point the floor vibrtates and you can hear it all over the 2 floors in the block and outside.

I have my diary sheet now to fill in.

I have spoken to my landlord but he doesn't do anything. What I've heard is even if we complain to the council, they can sometimes tip off the noisy tenants about a complaint. They can be sneaky. The police have called there well before we moved here and no action. Even if we speak in the flat she starts coughing loudly and banging about. She's bonkers!! I think moving is the only way out. I am afraid to move about in the flat!!

Your attitude is half of the problem... who cares what kind of music it is,there should be NO music late at night.
As for the "diary".I'm guessing you still haven't actually spoken to your neighbour about the disturbance- it makes no sense to me,she will guess that any diary will have come from someone,so you might as well be up front about things,it might save you all the diary nonsense.
Sorry to say this, but whining on the internet wont solve anything, direct action just might.

The first stage [ i.e. asking the neighbour nicely to turn down the music ] is best dispensed with as it's a fruitless endeavour and may actually escalate to verbal or physical unpleasantness.

The neighbour is breaking the rules of the tenancy, go straight to the second stage of complaining to landlord/ HA/ or Council.

Totally unhelpful and do you not believe in spaces after commas?

He doesn't have an attitude, but you most definitely do.

Someone asked what sort of music it was and he was kind enough to reply.

To be fair we already knew from the first post, and then by the second we knew she was part blond and in her forties or looks it.:D

Im really surprised the op has been given anything to fill in, before even telling them it is a problem.

My next door neighbour let the house to a couple of young guys who would start with the music on getting home and continue till past 3am.
I completely lost it one morning and banged on the door to complain. They were so shocked at the sight of me in my dressing gown in full Nora Batty mode, I never heard another peep from them. Ever.:D
