Hi my fridge broke yesterday. Its going to take a few days to get a new one. I have bought some long life milk in 1litre cartons. Will it be ok to give to the kids? Mostly on there cereal. And as milkshakes.None of them use baby bottles and sleep through the night so was hoping to just finish off 1litre in one go seeing as i dont have a fridge to store it in once its opened?

That's assuming your children don't complain about the taste, though!
thank you so much for your post. Just read it now after i posted about my worries. Youngest is 2 and it will be on cereal or with strawberry powder so they shouldnt mind i hope. It will only be for a week max
It's no worse than fresh cow's milk.
No difference apart from taste and length of time it can be kept it won't make them ill.
The only thing I can think off to make him say that is to remember that once opened long life milk should be treated the same as ordinary milk. It will only keep for a couple of days at best in a bucket of cold water without being refrigerated once open. Maybe people kept it out in the open longer thinking because its long life, it won't go off even after opening ?
He thought its been processed more but like one of the above post said there is no diffrence.
Thanks for all the replies. We opened a litre. It was a success. finished it off :-D really needed that cuppa after all that stressing. And iv also thought of keeping a carton in the cuoboard for whenever we run out of fresh milk and forgotten to buy some more.
We've been using nothing but UHT semi-skimmed milk for decades, we never buy anything else.
It's perfectly fine
Can you not afford a new fridge at the moment?, most independents would deliver one the same or next day (we often do).
I always do that. Handy as well for when you come back off holiday and can't get any fresh milk.:)
OH at work so cant have a look around until 7pm went yesterday decided on something but then middle of the night i thought of getting one whole 2m (aprox) fridge and whole 2m freezer if that makes sense. Seeing as i found my freezer too small and these new models are even smaller. Going to have a look today once we have decided we will definately get next day delivery.
I have had a few over the years that kept breaking down - so I spent a small fortune on a Miele and it is now 7 years old. It's still as good as new and has never missed a beat.
My experience is that long-life keeps longer than fresh milk, once opened.
I use to use it while camping in hot weather, and it could tolerate 30-40 degrees C for 12 hours with no problem.
Fresh milk needs more care, but is usually bought chilled so tastes better on cereal than tepid long-life! (A bit of an acquired taste..)
Actually the OP can just buy fresh milk more frequently (kids gets through it quickly anyway) and keep it in a cool-bag. Long-life is OK but it smells funny.
What makes kept breaking down? Thats what we are thinking of doing spending a little extra and getting something good. Went and had a look at lg tall fridge and tall freezer. Quite pricey.
In laws have had beko for a long time. And there not all that expensive. Thatz why im wondering is it luck or you have to pay extra for better quality?
Hotpoint and Beko.
Mines was a hotpoint.
That doesn't surprise me at all. I have had no end of trouble with Hotpoint appliances.
I was told in the appliance shop that hotpoint are mid range and lg aeg is top of the range. And today i was getting talked into buying beko because they specialise in kitchen appliances and lg dont they only cost more because of the digital gadgety thing not because of quality :-/
There are no LG/AEG fridge freezers recommended by Which? The AEG ones score 69% and are expensive whereas the LG mostly score less than this and are very expensive. There are too many Hotpoint models for me to go through individually but only 4 of them are Best Buys. No Bekos manufactured from 2011+ are recommended.
Hope this helps.
