PC is on internet with normal broadband, no wireless.
I would like phone to be on internet (reason being to download an android app). So can I do this by connecting phone to pc with a USB cable, is that possible?

Are you sure that the router you have does not have WiFi? If you tell us what make and model it is that would help. Most routers do have WiFi these days even if you are not using it for your main PC.
And is there any reason why you can't just connect the phone to the Google Play store via mobile data?
Oh and what phone do you have?
