Do Minefield early and use a house as a sleeping area and storage.

My only advice is don't ask questions just enjoy it and take it for what it is. Immerse yourself in the wasteland. Other than Red Dead Redemption and New Vegas you will probably never play another game as powerful as this.

The ray gun got me through about 90% of the game! :D

It is there in the regular edition.

Love the game, got the Platinum trophy last August after playing it off & on for nearly 2 years and 3 months. (To compare, F: NV only took me a year and 9 months!:D)
A show of how popular the game still is after 7 years happened the other day. Cryaotic did a 24 hour stream of F3 on Twitch and he had nearly 20,000 people watching him at one point.
He played it straight for 24 hours???:o

There's a dog companion in a scrapyard, I forget which one but easy to look up. Makes things MUCH easier once you grab him.

Thanks, I found him and had a bit of a play through before putting the controller down. Last thing I did was trying to locate Lucy's little brother after discovering her parents are dead. Have no idea where to go though...

One of the things I've noticed about Bethesda games is that for every perk there's a downside:
    - Water heals but also gives you radiation sickness.
    - Guns work but can be easily damaged and needs repairing.
    - Repairing works but only if you have certain repair skill points.

And everything costs a fortune! Makes things super challenging; I don't know how anybody could survive on hard!

Question: Is it possible to be good at everything in this game? Or is it like Skyrim where you're either a badass mage OR a badass swordsman?
I want to be good with lazer weapons, assault rifles, repeating and melee.

Go talk to Evan King in Arefu about what happened to her parents and where you might find her brother.
Answer: IMO it is possible, it just takes a fair old while before you're an expert in every discipline; OR you can specialise in those four and one or two others for this playthrough so you'll level up quicker and try some others out on the next run through the game.

Yeah, I've already spoken to him and he said he was with the Family but I don't recall him telling me where the Family are actually located.

Try searching inside the West's shack, talk to the other residents and then go back to Evan. He should give you three locations, when prompted, where the Family could be found.

I've already looked in the three locations and went back to Evan. I'm at the stage that says "locate the family"

Also, where can I find more mole rats? I've done the required amount but want to do seven more on the 'optional' quest. I think I've only got about 2 left.

Regarding the Family did you investigate all of those locations fully?

If you're doing the Moira molerats quests you'll find more than enough in that location.

That's the thing about Fallout - if there's a door open it. If the door is locked find the key or pick the lock.

Done the mission now. :D I got Ian back to Lucy by delivering the message and chose to let Evan donate blood in exchange for the Family to leave them alone. God, they're creepy!

I didn't. I actually found the rest in Hamilton lol. That Moira woman is so annoying! Sometimes I just want to buy or sale something to her but have endure the same speech about the research before telling her I haven't finished.

Moria is annoying but I used her missions to level up early on as they were fairly easy. If I remember correctly there's a link between Megaton, Tenpenny Tower and Moria. TGhe outcome made me LOL :D

If you save strategically you can pick up trophies/cheevos fairly cheaply.

Yes, taking a 5-10min break every 2 hours

I want to be good with lazer weapons, assault rifles, repeating and melee.

It's possible to max all skills on one playthrough even at original level cap.
There are Bobbleheads for every S.P.E.C.I.A.L. adding 1 point to each and one for every skill adding 10 points to each. Unfortunately you can't max SPECIAL but they can be buffed with apparel, quest rewards and the INTENSE TRAINING perk x10.
In addition there are loads of magazines for each skill (25 I think) that add 1 point at basic level or 2 points each, if you take the COMPREHENSION perk, but why wouldn't you?

I should have mentioned setting up your character earlier via SPECIAL

Of all INTELLIGENCE is the one to look at first. It should be set to 9 as this will give you maximum skill points per level and allow you to benefit from picking up the INTEL bobblehead, bringing you up to the max (10).
STRENGTH should be set to 7 so you can carry as much as possible and benefit from the bobblehead, a quest reward and, if you go that way, power armour.
    The others are personal preferrence.
CHARISMA helps with Speech and Barter
AGILITY helps with Small Guns and increases you total Action Points.
ENDURANCE helps with rad resistance and overall HP but HP goes up with every level anyway and the abundance of Rad-X and RadAway (again if you go that way, power armour) and the My First Infirmary house upgrade makes rad resistance nearly pointless.
PERCEPTION helps with Energy Weapons and helps with early warning when enemies are nearby.
LUCK helps with everything apparently but I find I don't need it for much and set it at 1 for most playthroughs but I stay away from perks that need high luck.

THE G.O.A.T. It's not pointless. The answers you give alter your base skill levels.

PERKS. Stay away from level increase perks like Gun Nut, Tag, Here & Now and anything to do with rad resistance (see above). Computer Whizz and Infiltrator perks are also to be avoided as you should never break a lock or lock a computer as you can back out of a hack/pick at any time to have another chance.
Look at perks you might want in future and build your skills toward what you'll need.
Strong Back is essential as is Comprehension.

As for the expensive shopping. I tend not to go shopping unless I can make a profit. You'll start coming across more and more excess gear. Syphon off a few items for use in repairs and sell the rest.

Stock up on all types of Nuka Cola and Sugar Bombs.
The random crap you find can be used to build unique weapons.

(Un)Luckily I lost my max score F3 save on 360. Same with Oblivion. So I'm having to play them both again.
On the other side of the coin I'm also playing through F3, F:NV and Skyrim on PS3 for the plats.

    I love these games.

Take your time and explore everywhere, this is one of the games great strengths, you can go anywhere and there are loads of quests and side-missions. I was a bit lost for the first week or two, but it grew on me so much that I ended up playing it (plus all the extras) for years, in fact I only stopped playing it when I got my new X1 a few weeks ago.

Must agree about that NE part of the map.
I found sniping skills from a high point could be handy.

I hope you enjoy this game, IMO it is an epic of the first order with great re-playability.

Even at full price this game is a bargain. At 4 dabs it's a friggin steal. GOTY can be picked up new for £15.

I had never played and stuck with an RPG in my life until this game. It took me a good 6 or so hours to properly get into it, but after that I was hooked.

As accomplished as Skyrim is, Fallout 3 is still the better game in my opinion. Combat is better, the story is tighter and the moral choice system is robust.

Always have been tempted to pick up the DLC for it.

The faction system in New Vegas and then Skyrim is a good addition. but I agree Fallout 3 is the best of the recent Bethesda offerings. Although, I play them all consistently.

F3 has great DLC. Probably the best of any game so far. it annoys me that Oblivion & Skyrim only got 1 & 2 pieces of full DLC respectively. While F3 got 5 and F:NV got 4.

I sort of preferred New Vegas. I found it more focused and I thought it had a better atmosphere.

F3 had the better atmosphere for me. I think it was the city ruins that made it feel more post-apocalyptic. NV also needed more city ruins to explore. But weapon mods and faction system made NV a great game. It's just F3 is so close to my heart.

Both are great but FNV is rahter good at a poor frame rate. So best played on PC
