Healing Liver Damage

I have a drink problem which many people here will know about as i have posted about it numerous times.

I haven't had a drink for nearly 3 weeks now and feel determined to carry on not drinking.

The problem is i have felt unwell in recent months and have had pain and cramps and this weird tight feeling in my abdomen and chest. A doctor in police custody examined me and told me i was showing signs of liver damage, so i went to my usual GP who told me that this other dr wouldn't be able to tell just by examining me which was all rather confusing:confused: But i got sent for blood tests and scans but everything came back clear.

But these symptoms persist. Does anyone know of particular food or drink or supplements to take to help repair a damaged liver? I know most people will tell me that stopping drinking is the best way and so far i am doing this. But if there is anything else i can do i'd like to try it as i do feel somethings not right. I'm hoping its still at a stage where it can be reversed

What blood tests and scans did you have? If they showed that your liver is OK, presumably your abdominal pain is down to something else.

I had liver function and various others that i can't really remember but i assume were all drink related and i had a chest and abdomen x-ray. Later i had a second set of blood tests and an ultrasound scan.

The other thing is i keep needing to pee as well

What I do know is that drinking water will flush out your liver and kidneys of toxins. It's not going to repair them, but it'll help them function as best as they can. Besides, you have results back indicating all clear so you might be worrying a bit too much.

I've had both the liver function blood test and ultrasound myself recently. I presume the fact that you had an ultrasound must mean that your liver function test was a bit off (which was the case for me), but by the sounds of it your scan didn't show anything serious. I have an MRI scan lined up, which might be an option for you also, but I guess you really need to go back and have a chat with your GP and let them know your concerns,

In view of all the issues that you've had to deal with, I'd suggest getting your GP to refer you to a specialist hepatology consultant to advise you on all these interrelated matters. I hope that things work out for you. :)

I think TelevisionUser is right, however I don't think it would hurt to drink several cups of milk thistle tea a day. Best of luck!

I think I am right in saying that the liver is the only organ that can regenerate, unless it has gone to cirrhosis level.

To help the healing, obviously avoid alcohol. Take milk thistle supplements over a long period of time. Drink plenty of water. Do not take too many paracetemol/painkillers. Be wary of any medicines, even those prescribed. Looking at some medicines it specifically says they should be used with caution for those with liver damage. Just nourish yourself with good stuff.

    Drink plenty of water.

DON'T do this! If your liver function is in any way imparied, what you should NOT do is attempt to "flush" it, your liver won't be able to handle the throughput of fluids and you'll actually do more damage :o Don't exceed your normal fluid intake...and actually sip it slower than normal.

As for actual toxins - your liver will expel these itself, as long as you stop putting more in the top end :p

There's also a panel of foods that will promote healthy liver function...as well as a series of foods to avoid ;-) Google it, I did a few weeks ago for the OH's mother.

Greek mountain tea called "malotira". Very nice with honey sweetener.

My main advice to you is the BIB above. Stick to it rigidly, and don't be tempted !!!

Your liver will repair itself, if indeed it is damaged, but don't brutalise it with alcohol again. Or it really will get damaged.

Bear in mind your symptoms could be due to anxiety, probably over the fact you've been told you have liver damage! Make another visit to your GP to follow up the blood tests.

Some terrible replies earlier but this one is Likely spot on!

OP if you have a normal set of scans and blood tests, it's most likely there isn't a physical disease causing your symptoms.
