What phone next, another lousy Galaxy or something else?

Hi.
My phone is coming up for upgrade soon, and before I start going into shops & getting babbled to death by sales people regarding deals & packages, I'd like a heads up regarding which actual handset to get.
My current one is a Galaxy Ace and I've not been overly keen on it. Are they any better now than they were a couple of years ago, or still basically the same? I found the internal storage to be laughable, even without any movies, music or tonnes of apps on there. I only have 1 page of apps and it tells me all the time my storage is getting low.
I'm going to stick with a smartphone, as I'm used to it now. I don't make a lot of calls, mainly texts. Don't play games, or listen to much music on there - certainly don't use it like an ipod. Just a good sized screen for web browsing - nothing smaller than what I have now, basic phone/text capability and ideally more storage.
Any suggestions? Cheers.

You will get a lot of responses of different phones because your needs are fairly generic and fulfilled by the vast majority of phones. Any phone you buy now will have a better screen than the Ace and likely more storage. A few weeks ago I'd have recommended my own phone, the Google Nexus 4 - fantastic piece of kit, excellent value for money, screen a good size (4.65") and a decent amount of storage (16GB). However it's currently discontinued by Google, but if you can find one being sold at a decent price, I'd certainly highly recommend one.
The Galaxy Nexus has a 4.65" screen. The Nexus 4 has a 4.7" display.
I would recommend the Nexus 4 if you can get hold of one, perhaps on eBay. The Huawei Ascend Y300 and the quad-core ZTE Blade V are also extremely good budget options. There's lots out there on Android.
If you want to go slightly more high end, the Galaxy Ace 3 is a good device also.
Just trying to feel out some alternative handsets around the Ace mark, maybe a wee bit better...
Same price deal with the Nokia Lumia 625....
Don't know if you can stretch to this?
It has some good reviews and sounds like a good phone (especially for that price.
The S4 Mini is a bit better but the screen resolution is still quite low. I'd also recommend the Xperia SP.
I guess what I need to know is, if I went for the Galwxy S3 or S4 mini - will I notice a difference from my old Galaxy Ace?
I have an ace 2 and a S3 mini. You will have a much improved user experience with the newer phones.
You should also consider a HTC One android handset
Not sold on the Z1, Note 3, 5S etc, Nexus 5 and LG G2 looks interesting but nothing really stood out this time.
I'd agree. The S Mini range is a middle level phone. The Ace range is bargain basement cheap for consumers who have very low expectations.
OP - the fact that you've run into issues with the Ace means that your usage requires something better. I think either the S3 or S4 Mini would improve what you have now. If you're going to keep it for 2 years though, I'd go for the S4 Mini if you can.
How much are you spending now and which network do you prefer? And when can you upgrade.
Aside from the S4 mini there is the HTC One mini at about the same price range. Also the Sony Xperia SP, is decent. and you can pick up the real Galaxy S3 on a good deal these days.
These are all good mid range phones that would be able to cope with what you need for the length of a two year contract.
When the time for the new phone have a play in the phone shops but buy it by using a comparison site as you will get a much better deal or at least have a bargaining tool to negotiate an upgrade.
I've been through the lists with my current contract provider, and these seem to be the deals where I can get the data, minutes and texts for the same price or lower than I'm paying:
GALAXY S4 MINI
GALAXY S3 MINI (£5 less per month)
NOKIA LUMIA 520 (FREE TABLET)
NOKIA LUMIA 625
SONY EXPERIA M
Once I narrow it down a little I'll get on the comparison sites
Got told by 3 the other day that Sony have recalled them all. Not sure if that was just an excuse though!
My son ended up with an Xperia T instead. Seems a decent enough handset.
That's the way I'm leaning...
I'd agree with this.
I guess the S3 Mini if you wanted to save £120 over the contact (assuming they are 2 year contracts)?
You will see a massive speed improvement in everything too.
Good call, although if we're talking for the next 2 years the S4 version will be more future proof than the S3.
If the above is not feasible ask your self whether you prefer Sense or Touchwiz as the real world hardware specs between Samsung and HTC mini editions are so similar as to make no difference.
Can get a great Win 8 phone. The Os is slick and elegant but you get locked into an ecosystem.
