Good luck countrybumpkins. I'll join in too. I failed miserably in my attempt to keep the weight off last year. I managed to lose nearly 4 stone with lighter life but then was forced to leave the group and gained it all back and more. I have a lot to lose and really want this year to be the year I manage it. I have high cholesterol now so it's even more important that I manage my weight.
I'm starting the diet on monday. I'm going to make a shopping list and go to the supermarket tomorrow to stock up on fresh fruit and veg and try to plan my meals for the week. Giving up chocolate and diet fizzy drinks will be the hardest thing for me.
I was given Wiifit plus for xmas too so aim to spend an hour on that several times per week and then increase my exercise levels as I lose weight.

Trouble is I've said this all before.

I've got a fair bit to lose too so hello!

I'm addicted to carbs so I'm going to try and drastically cut down on them while excercising for at least half an hour a day (at first) and then doing more as I get fitter.

I've been a bit ill this week so been rather good food wise but I'm starting properly on Monday.

I usually find it hard to diet as I'm a fussy eater so I never like recommended recipes etc. This time I'm just going to use my common sense and try a few new things that I'll like hopefully!

    Good luck everyone!

Im in - ive gained a stone this year i cant seem to shed but i havent had a good exercise routine until very recently. i considered the rowlands pharmacy diet with a lot of cardio and light weights but it doesnt teach u how to eat properly so i dont know how you would keep it off? At the mo im just trying to burn off more cals than i eat each day. Didnt go well in the end tonight. Had an ok breakfast forgot lunch then ended up having a burger king whopper :( after spending 2 and a half hours exercising. How many calories are they? Feel sad like my effort has gone to waste. Moment of weakness and laziness over cooking.

What do you all eat when you diet...and does it cost you a fortune? Seems to make eating so much harder more expensive and easier to fail with the constant food obsessions.

I too am carb/sugar/red meat obsessed cutting those out seems to leave me nothing but salad fish and a bit of chicken..not very exciting. Do weight watchers meals work?

I cant run im rubbish at it...only way i can get cardio out is by doing sessions of 20 mins on 4 different machines. Stepper, bike, rower, walking on high gradient at quite good speed - whilst listening to mativational audio books like napoleon hill key to riches (life riches not just monetry )
It sounds silly but helps me push myself hearing it :o

I think I really need the support of a group and a weekly weigh in. There are local groups near me for Rosemary Conley, WeightWatchers and Slimming World and I'm not sure which one to join. Has anyone here tried these before and which would they reccommend?

Can i join in to :) I'm starting my diet on Monday and will also be joining a gym the week after next. I have really piled on the weight over past few yrs so is desperate to lose it as my blood pressure has always been high but has got higher recently. Docs have upped my meds so I'm now taking 6 tablets a day.

I'm sure losing weight will help me. I have some recipes for soups etc that i can post here also. Will be nice sharing what we do and the weight loss with others...

Yep Slimming World. To be honest I'm not convinced.

I joined and dropped 30lbs in about 5 weeks. All is good. :D
I carried on losing weight but at a much slower level. There was some weeks I would put on a pound or two. Onve I put on half a stone and had no idea why as I hadn't changed anything. After 6 months I plateaueed having lost around 4 stone. I would lose a pound, gain two, lose again. I was going nowhere. On and on it went for a year. I stayed the same give or take a couple of pounds dow a whole year. It wasn't like I didn't have anything to lose. I was 20.5 stone.
In that year my group teacher/instructor decided to pack it in after getting disillushioned with the company. That was just before Xmas 2008. The members were being told that the group would carry on so they turned up only to find no group. The website said there was even saying who was running it but nothing. As there was her contact number I rang it and was told she had taken over the group but she wasn't doing the evening one, just the morning.
Fair enough I could get to that one. That was when I had my first problem (bar not losing weight for 6 months). because I hadn't been to a group for a few weeks I had to pay all the outstanding payments whixh was almsot £20. Sod that, it's your fault I didn't come because Slimming World didnt inform me of the changes.
The other option was to join as a new member which sould be a week's membership £4.50 plus £9 joining fee. If I do that then all my previous accomlishment is written off and I start fresh. I argued that wasn't on either. She let me join and said she would check with head office to see if I have to pay owing to the confusion. I never did, but I don't know if that is because HO said no or she didn't bother in the end.

That was this time last year. I stayed with her despite the fact she wasn't much use as and didn't encourage until June. in that 6 months nothing had changed and I was still stuck on that plateau. The straw that broke my back was she started to accuse me of cheating because it SW works. If I were cheating why wasn't my weight going up and staying up? Then she started on about how SW isn't a diet, it's healthy eating. On and on she went and I thought enough! Why do you award Slimmer of the week and not healthy living of the week? Why is your magazine full of reciepes to lose weight? Why do you weigh people if it's not to see how much they have lost?
That was when I walked. That was in June. I stuck with what I was supposed to do using their books and I didn't put any weight on, but didn't lose any either. This meant I had been the same for about 16 months. In the last 6 weeks I have started to put on the weight. I've gone back to my old bad habits. Not having breakie, skipping meals. Eating the wrong type of meals (not takeaways) and my worst one. No breakie, a sarnie for lunch around noon and then dinner about midnight and into bed so I'm not burning it off. Because I've had so much at the moment, college, voluntary work, applying for a job and writing a newletter for a charity I've stated living on toast. Lots and lots of toast as it's quick and easy. In the last 6 week's I've put on almost two stone.

One thing I noticed from my time in SW was you have people that have been going a couple of years and have lost a stone or two stone. that isn't much for over 100 weeks. That's less than a pound a month. I believe that they are teaching healthy eating, but if you aren't going to excercise you won't shoft the weight. You have a group of people been there years and lose 1-2 stone. One young girl decided to do a bike ride London to Brighton. She's out on her bike getting fit to do it. She loses 5 stone. I wonder what the difference is?

SW, Weight Watchers and the like are going to have diferent offers at the moment, mostly sign in January and no joining fee. I would suggest join, get the books etc and how to do it, Go to the groups for about 5 or 6 weeks so you can ask the group leader any questions you have and then walk away. Unless you need to be part of the group to make friends and get clapped for losing 2 pound or getting clapped for encouragement if you stay the same or put on weight.

I still have the SW books so am going to go back to them and start again but I'm not going to go back to the groups. I can't afford too at the moment and more importantly I can't justify paying £5 per week to get weighed when I could buy a set of scales for a fiver (if I didn't have some) and weight myself at home. That £20 per month I can use elsewhere.

As far as being in with this losing weight. Count me in, I'll join you lot in the battle. Good luck everyone! :)

That's great good luck with that. Is it a council gym or one that's part of a chain?

About 5 years ago I joined the gym and hated it. It's so damned boring even with 6 screens showing various TV channels.
Despite that i did go every day. Then one day on the way to the gym I was crossing the road and a bus was coming so went to run. As I slammed my foot down I did myself an injury and ended up having to stop for a while. That did it for me and I couldn't get motivated to go back to it. As expected the weight i loss came back and then some. I say as expected because I knew it would happen. Whilst I was going to the gym, I had no idea wat to do about diet/healthy eating. this meant my food was the same. bowl of porridge for breakie, a plain omlette and salad for lunch. A piece of chicken and salad for main meal. Exactly the same 7 days a week. Once you go back to eating other food it's going to hit your weight hard.

    Two tips.

    1.
Get an MP3 or MP4 and load it up with songs. as I say i was bored and hating the gym but once I got an MP3 I started to enjoy it. I even started going twice a day. 9am-10:30 and 6pm-7pm sometimes 7:30.

Load up the MP3 with fast songs because they make you pedal or work out faster. Ballads make you slow down and ease up and take breaks you don't need. If you can get inspirational songs even better. I don't know the artists and some song titles but I had.
Your love (is lifting me higher and higher). Keep on running, Tie Your Mother Down (Queen) Reach and Don't Stop Movin (S Club) and Relight My Fire (Take That) as well as many others.
Try and make sure you have loads and loads on it. On my first smaller MP3 I had about 20 songs on there. Hearing them twice a day every day you do start to get bored of them. The one I have at the momet I can load up about 24 hours of music so that will be better.

Getting that MP3 made all the difference. between that, doing the gym twice a day and eating better I was dropping a pound a day. That lasted a month until I got injured. If only I had got the eating side right so it was a healthy balanced diet I would have been well sorted.

    2.
Talk to the trainer/staff about diet. If you excerise you need to increase what you eat as you will be burning up lots of calories. If you get it wrong you will work out like mad but not get the benefits. On a show called The Biggest Loser the contestants were working out 6 hurs a day, 7 days a week and lost nothing or 1 pound. The trainers knew it wasnt fr not doing the excercise so asked how many calories they had eaten. They were supposed to eat 1800-2000 but they were eating 800-1000 thinking if they excercise a lot and take in less they'll lose weight. Doing that doesn't work. So talk to the trainers/staff about what you need to eat calories wise.

To burn one pound of fat you need to burn 3500 calories.

thanks Cunningham for posting about your experiences with slimming world. I hate how they put the blame on the customer if something doesn't work with their diet. When I did lighterlife it almost felt like a cult, with no one allowed to say anything negative about the plan. I lost a lot of weight on it very quickly, and really believed in it too, but then they made me leave with no notice because they'd belatedly inputted my medical details into their computer and it said I shouldn't have been on the plan to start with. Complained to head office, who made my group leader travel down for a meeting with them and got all my money back too. But I went from drinking three shakes per day (total 500 cals) to being refused access to them and no advice on how to go back to eating solid food again. Of course I ended up bingeing and put all the weight back on and more.

Oh and in our group of 12, 8 of them had done the plan before and had to come back. Even the co founder of the lighterlife plan is morbidly obese again. They just keep her away from any publicity shots now.

No worries. My original group leader was really supportive but once they started getting on her back to sell more magazines and museli bars she started to lose interest. She became a group leader as she wanted to help people. Not flog their stuff. When they told her she has to go out on Boxing Day and put 1000 leaflets through letter boxes to get new customers she thought enough and gave in her notice.

I'm sorry that you had a bad experience with Lighterlife. That seems a bit rough on you. It was their fault. Although if they found something on the medical side I can understand them acting on it. They should have been more understanding and helpful though.

You are right to use the term cult. I've always had my doubts about these kind of companies. They play on people's insecurities and unhappiness. I think people that rave about them are more into the freinds they've made there and like the socialising side at the meetings. It gives them an distorted image of the groups.
I only went and joined one because there was a chance I came close to a heart attack New Years Day 2007. They did the tests and got me on a walking machine covered in wires. I passed and they said my heart is actually in good nick. If I could drop the weight I'm in good shape as far as that's concerned.
Last year I thought I was having another but said nothing then worked it out. I have to have anti-inflamitary pills for my back. It works on the muscles. I'm supposed to take two. Because I was lifting furniture and doing lots of bending instead of taking one I took six. Normally I take three or four if I know I'm going to do something that is going to do my back no favours but it was the end of the strip so I thought I'll take the other two. The heart is a muscle and it didn't like having six of those pills on top of pain killers and so was letting me know.
It hasn't stopped me I still take three or four and pain killers on top if I know I'm going to do something that will bugger my back up. So many people have told me I'm my own worst enemy. Well better the devil you know..... :p

Im choosing slimming world because I watched my sister have a great experience with them in the run up to her wedding. She lost 3 stone and is still losing. I agree with cunningham tho, the exercise has to be a big part with them.
I have a lot of respect for anyone who has tried lighter life because it sounds like a miserable experience only having the shakes - Can anyone say how hard it is dropping to 500 calories a day ?

I have one major problem with my weight loss plan - I manage a chocolate shop and I regularly get given free samples to try to talk to customers about. Its all soooooo good it is going to test my willpower to untold measures in the coming weeks !

Also, has anyone got any exercise ideas other than the gym ? It makes my stomach curl to think of being in a room with people half my size dressed in the worlds most unforgiving fabrics.

    I'm in if you'll have me. :)
I've got a lot to lose ..another 5 stone till I'm happy. I've already lost 1 stone 3 lbs since November by low carbing. Last week I got fed up and introduced healthy carbs but stuck to under 1000 calories a day. I was miserable and the scales went up.

So, from tomorrow I'm back on low carb. I know it suits my body, even if I lose at a snails pace. I have more energy and my joints don't hurt so much without carbs. It's pretty boring though, as I'm a vegetarian.

I really wanted to lose 4 stone by end of March, when I have a date. But it doesn't look like that's going to happen now (unless I catch up).

I weigh every day but take Monday's weigh in as my weekly loss. Also, need to start exercising. Wanted to start weights but am neurotic about gaining, as sometimes happens when you start exercise. Will be doing any exercise at home, as I don't go out hardly ever.

Here's hoping we all make our goals this year.

Someone is going to say Wii Fit. That is supposed to be fun and helps I've been told.
The other I would suggest depends on how much confidence you have. Find the nearest line dancing club. I know that sounds naff etc but it works. my sister-in-law dropped serious weight doing it. I think she lost about 6 stone. You know you are going to make mistakes the first few times but that's ok.

Often they have beginners groups for an hour before the normal one. So you can do a few weeks in that group before moving up to the main group. Or you could do both of course. It's not all country music either. Her group used to do it to Britney, Abba, Steps, Status Quo all sorts of music.
I went once but couldn't do it because of my back. I would have been the only guy in the group but who cares? lol

If you are confident going to the pool go swimming or water aerobics. But be warned. Water Aerobics knackers you out if you're not used to it. I didn't think you could sweat in the water but I was. When you have loads of people moving in the water you start standing 20ft from the poolside before you know whats happening you turn around and hit the wall. You've shifted that far over.

If you can ride a bike see about getting one of them. It's less boring riding outside than on a static bike indoors.

Become the Shake 'n' Vac woman lol
Instead of spending money getting the latest z list celebs get fit DVD just put on some music and dance. Nobody is home. If need too, close the curtains and let your hair down shake your booty!

I'm in too, I want to lose about 2 stone that I've put on over the last couple of years. I'm also a believer in low carb as I know it suits me and my metabolism. I love my carbs so find it really hard, but that is what I shall be doing nonetheless :)

Congratulations on losing over a stone already. That's brilliant. :D

I'm glad you understand carbs and stuff as I haven't a clue. Understanding carbs, starch, iron etc is the thing I can't seem to do. I want to eat an "balanced" diet but can't as I don't know what I am eating and how one works with another. One of the things I did keep getting told off about in SW was not having any dairy products or bread. Apparently I need it or something.

My GP has told me don't weigh yourself every day it just makes you paranoid. It's not accurate anyway. If you weigh yourself at 10pm it will be different at 6pm after you've eaten, walked about at work etc.
The time that you eat affects it as well. If you eat your main meal at 7pm and then weigh yourself at 8pm you will weigh more than if you weighed yourself at 6pm then ate.
It's better to weigh yourself naked or in your underwear once a week at the same time. So do it as soon as you get up on Sunday. Don't do it Sunday 8am this week and 11am next week because you would have eaten a breakfast that day. Stay as close to the same day and time as possible.

Have any of you seen the Channel 4 series called Supersize Vs Super Skinny?

I applied to go on that show. It was before the first series so I had no idea what it was like. I've no interest in being famous or all that cobblers. I thought if I get picked I would get access to an nutritionist and a trainer who could give me some exercises that I could do that isn't going to mess my back up anymore than it is.

I got as far as going to the Endemol offices for an interview. They filmed me answering a few questions asked by the producer. The kind of thing you've seen on shows like TBL.
They said that they would be in touch. They have to show all the videos to Channel 4 for approval.

My nephew who works in Tv behind the scenes told me I wouldn't get picked for the show.
He said as I didn't cry that went against me. They do like someone who gets all emotional.
When I told him that I was asked if I'm hoping to find love and a relationship after I lost weight, he asked what I said?
I told them I haven't given it much thought. I know I'm no Brad Pitt with or without the weight so I don't tend to think of things like that. I'm not saying no, if it happens then it happens.
My nephew told me that was the wrong answer. They ask that question because they are looking to see if there is a possible follow up or spin-off show opportunity.

I didn't get on the show obviously and having seen the show I'm glad I didn't as I don't think it's very good. I do wonder though what would have happened if I had. Would I have lost any weight and how much it would change my confidence and self esteem.

You can kick as hard as you like..I'm well padded. :D

:D You won't be for long if you stay off the carbs! Oh yeah, don't even mention potatos, although I will eat small quantities of healthy potatos occasionally I expect!

I used to have major issues with choccie but fortunately managed to lose a lot of my sweet tooth, which can only be a good thing!

Ooh just to add, I crave carbs badly when I'm premenstrual, and that is also the time I find myself really wanting the sweet stuff still, it's a flipping nightmare
