Wow, I thought everybody was joking around, until I noticed the dates of the posts. :D

Back in 2001 I would have had, as my fastest computer:

    Intel Pentium III 600MHz,
    128MB PC100 SDRAM,
    40GB HDD & 200GB HDD,
Nvidia TNT2 32MB AGP Graphics Card,
Aureal Vortex 3D PCI Sound Card (later upgraded to a PCI SoundBlaster Live 5.1),
    PCI 56K WinModem,
RealTek RTL8139 10/100MBps PCI Ethernet Card,
    1x CD-ReWriter & 1x DVD-Rom drive
OS: Windows 2000 / XP (at end of year)

    Nowadays, my fastest is:

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600,
    2GB PC2-6400 DDR2 RAM,
    2x 500GB HDD, 1x 1TB HDD, 1x 400GB HDD & 1x 160GB HDD,
Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT 512MB PCI-E Graphics Card,
    Onboard RealTek ALC888 5.1 Sound,
    Onboard RealTek RTL8168B Gigabit Ethernet,
    1x CD/DVD Re-Writer
    OS: Windows 7

    Mine is not that powerful.

    A Asrock N68-GS motherboard
    2GB of DDR ram
AMD Athlon II dual core 3.00Ghz CPU.
    Geforce 90880GT video card
    and a 250Gb Hitachi drive.

    A old Acer 17 inch 4:3 monitor.

    All being updated next year,

Get a nice Samsung 22inch monitor.
a Asrock 890FX Deluxe3 motherboard, I love Asrock boards, they are so stable and good value for the price

    4GB of DDR3 ram,

not sure on CPU, either a quad core Phenom or a six core.

I want to go for a Cooler master case maybe the coolermaster HAF 912.

Video card I have no idea, I don't need anything too fancy.

I want the system for video editing, so ram and hard drive space is the main thing.

I may get a small SSD for the OS and some software and then a large 1TB drive for storage and use my 250Gb drive for other software

Depends on how the money tree grows I suppose.

    As of Dec 2010.....

    - Pentium 4 (2.8ghz)
    - 2 GB RAM
    - 80Gb+250GB HDD
    - Nvidia FX5500 graphics card

...and surprisingly is still pretty quick for most of today's applications (MS Office, older games 2008 (and before), Windows 7, etc) despite the Pentium 4 CPU dating back to 2002!

Obviously the latest games cannot be played on it and full HD (1080p) is very choppy.

Am seriously looking at Intel Sandy Bridge in 2011 (unless AMD "Bulldozer" can pull off a performance coup from Intel).

WTF just notice the thread is over 10 years old.

    :D
Yep, and I'm still here! Some of those usernames are a right blast from the past. :)

Yes but is anyone who posted originally still using their old computer :D
Believe it or not the machine I used to post in this thread originally was in service until about a year ago. The CPU and mobo were still the originals but the HDD and RAM had further upgrades since that post. The PSU had to be replaced as well. It was replaced as it was dreadfully slow for the modern internet although it was pretty good at the time!

To build or to buy, what is cheaper?

I tend to build my own systems. Seems to be cheaper I think. I already have a case/base unit.

Definitely building. If we're talking about off the shelves in computer stores. You'd likely pay in the region of £2,000 for something that would cost you £1,000 to build. You'd have to pay for the labour and all sorts. In that case, building's ALWAYS cheaper.

    Old build

    Intel 980x
    24gb
    gtx480 tri sli
    2tbx6
    cooler master HAFX
3x monitor setup 2560p each monitor.

This was worst thing ever built the amount ram was pointless 3xgtx480 was worse than two in sli. The electricity bill was a bitch. And I need car and insurance.

So I sold some of bits off now have:

    intel 980x
    6gb
    1x gtx480
    2tbx6
    cooler master HAFX

Oh, how I long for a self-built PC so I don't feel like an outsider :( My current PC's only fit for the absolute basic user.
