sometimes they do delay starting UK showing so that they can be shown without the breaks that are usual in US schedules. However I believe Dexter is shown in the US without a mid season break.
Yup - Dexter has no break in the US.
Series shown on the main broadcast networks are stretched out from ~Sep/Oct until ~May for the standard "Fall Season", and so have mid-season breaks plus take odd weeks off here and there. Fringe, Hawaii Five-0, Once Upon a Time, Castle, etc.
Series shown on cable, however, are generally shown in an uninterrupted run of 10-13 episodes. Dexter & Homeland on Showtime; Sons of Anarchy on FX; True Blood, Boardwalk Empire, and Game of Thrones on HBO; Mad Men on AMC; etc. There are a few exceptions (The Walking Dead has had a break on AMC this season and last season, plus shows on USA such as Covert Affairs and White Collar have slightly longer runs than normal so do have a brief break).

I loved 30 Rock too, but sadly it has gone off the boil completely this series.

Yeah, that's all there's left. Sadly, doesn't compare to a locally stored HD file which is not flash and therefore can be played by most devices.
