Is it mission based or random maps like the old one? Mission based will be a turn off for me.

I hadn't played the old one before and found it on abandonware last night. I'd describe it as 'faithful yet improved reboot' and it can be hopefully introduce the franchise to a new graphic hungry generation

as stated by firaxis in their earlier interviews and previews there is a set amount of maps.

    From Gamespy

"Firaxis says there are approximately 80 maps in total, so what it lacks in randomization it will make up for in sheer volume. Plus, we do know that while maps won't be randomized, alien spawn points and alien types will be. So even if you think you've figured out a sure-fire path for your soldiers to take through particular maps, you'll discover plenty of surprises.."

Played the first few levels and so far so good. The core game is still there and the battles are still tense. I think i could be spending many hours on this.

Regardless, there are 1 or 2 things i don't like. It doesn't matter where your soldiers are from, they can be from Japan, Russia or any European country, they still talk with an american accent and there doesn't seem to be any base building like in previous games. I seemed to have started with most facilitys already. I would have preferred to have started with nothing and bulit my radar, barracks and research centres from scratch.

I hear that the base needs to be expanded as the game progresses. For example, to research new tech quicker, more research lab facilities need to be constructed and further specialist staff employed. Similarly with manufacture, spy sats etc. I'm pretty confident that this is the case, because the micro management side of XCOM is a key element.

Steam will not ban for using a VPN. The only reason they will ban for you using a VPN is if you use it to get the game cheaper from another region or sometimes if you constantly switch your VPN location, Steam can lock your account since to Steam it appears like it has been accessed from a number of different countries in a short time span.

    They've recently changed their policies.

Am worried how it plays using a joypad, these kind of games really need a mousey (like the original)

This game has been designed with a gamepad as a primary controller, unfortunately for MK gamers.

Played it for a couple of hours today on the PS3 and really enjoyed it, everything that I loved about the original seems to be there.

I will report my thoughts after more time with it.

Ohh and it works great with a joypad!

Downloading from Steam now. 12 gigs! Glad I don't have a download limit! I've actually grown to enjoy playing games with a joypad having started off as a keyboard+mouse fan.

Glad to hear this. I was undecided as to whether to pick it up on the 360 due to these kind of strategy games usually being difficult to play on consoles.

    I love this game.

I love how you get attached to some of your soldiers. I have (or should i say 'had') a soldier called 'Mad dog' who was my senior officer. I took him into a mission and kept him back only to get ambushed and then he became alien food. I was gutted.:(

I've started a new game now because the first one went didn't go down too well and there was world wide panic.Nice to see that your second game doesn't hold your hand like the first one and your left to make your own decisions.

Have ordered this on PC from Steam but not had a chance to play it yet, not even sure if it's unlocked for play yet but will find out soon enough.

The original XCom game is one of my all time favourites so really looking forward to trying this out, if it's anything like as good as the original it should keep me entertained for a good while!

I managed to do that in TFTD. I had about five troops that could mind control a tentaculat no problem. Used to use my mind controllers to help give my rookies some target practice: mind control a lobsterman, take its weapons away from it, line it up and when the turn was over, let my rookies take pot shots. Fish in a barrel!

Pocket XCOM - Ghost Recon Shadow Wars - 3DS

If you fancy a spot of portable XCOM-esque turn based strategic action, this is a steal for 3DS owners. Featuring a lengthy campaign and additional Skirmish battles, it's a quality tactical combat title that is well worth 9 quid.

    GR Shadow - £8.98

Yep, Psionics are in the game. Indeed in the first demo mission, a Sectoid geezer is mind controlling one of your troops.

Haha... EXACTLY what happened to me too!

Got out of work early today, and have been playing ever since (just stopped now to listen to the News Quiz). I'm loving it. It's got the "feel" of the original down to a T. And it's very much like the original in that you can get very attached very quckly to your best troops- and they can die even quicker. It's quite unusual for a modern game to let the player properly FAIL so easily.

I'm sure in a few days I'll have complaints, but at the moment I couldn't be happier with it.

A guy called Daniel 'Shotty' Hughes from the UK is my highest rank soldier. He carries a laser shotgun and has a back up of a laser pistol and he never seems to miss.

I'll admit that i've loaded up a previous save a few times after he has died.:o

Just completed my first Alien base and 'Shotty' was the only guy to survive out of a team of 6! Think i'll have to invest some research in to some armor for him.

yea nice mention .seen it go for about a fiver on ebay too,its an overlooked bargain game from the 3ds launch. its similar certainly as it was actually produced by Jullian Gollop the creator of the xcom series. :)
