iPod and existing music on PC

The answer to this may be somewhere in this forum but I have had a look and can't find it.

I am thinking of buying an iPod Nano. I have a lot of music on the PC which I downloaded years ago and some is copied from CDs.

Can I put this music onto a Nano? I have a couple of tracks I paid for and downloaded from iTunes but the most of what I have is from other sources.

I don't want an iPod with the only way I can get music on to it is to pay to download the same tracks from iTunes.

In a nutshell - could I copy any of my existing CDs to the nano?

Yes. You can rip CDs to your PC or transfer any music you have on you PC, as long as you haven't bought them from an online shop that uses Digital Rights Management.

Make sure you rip CDs to mp3 though, as ripping as Windows Media Audio will mean they'll have to be converted in iTunes software before transfer to the iPod.
