I thought it was ITV, with white trash programming such as Kyle, XFactor and BGT.

Not forgetting other quality ITV offerings like Loose Women, This Morning, Tipping Point and on ITV 2 five hours of Kyle berating some obnoxious losers in tracksuits where most of their swearing is edited out. Channel 5 has its faults, but daytime on ITV is absolute garbage.

Latest thing is dumping Thunderbirds at 08:00 in the morning.

It might interrupt videos from 1991 of people falling off ladders. People knock Channel 5 unfairly, OK they still persist with two Aussie soaps no one bothers with now and Big Brother is an acquired taste, but our biggest commercial broadcaster just seems to be happy to churn out tired old tat like You've Been Framed and Jeremy Kyle for years on end.

It's a children's show, given a prominent show in a children's block, with a very prominent launch at teatime during a bank holiday weekend. ITV aren't exactly screwing it over, they just aren't doing exactly what you wanted...

ITVBe is the white trailer park trashiest channel by far.

And well deserved if the other day's schedules are anything to go by.

Ohwell at least you aren't forced to pay for channel 5 unlike the bbc i guess plenty of trash on bbc too that licence payers pay for.
I say you as i don't have a tv licence i only watch on demand, channel 5 isn't the best channel but it does have good content on it such as persons unknown, csi, ncsi, law and order, gotham to name a few.
The benefit bashing programmes do let the channel down.

Not to mention Good Morning Britain with their endless mums and babies nonsense.

Maybe the likes of Singh and Reid would be suited to Home and Away? No babies and mums on that show.

I don't see how Channel 5 is any different to ITV in terms of broadcasting and quality. The whole concept of commercial programming, funded by adverts, means that it's easier to generate revenue by commissioning programmes that appeal to the largest group that will sit on their backsides in front of the goggle-box during peak watching periods.

So they aim their programs at the lowest common denominator - which also happen to be very cheap to produce. A whole heap of regulations used to keep this sort of tripe in check and firmly in the realm of small day-time TV slots, but since those same regulations have been relaxed? It's open season on catering to stupidity.

"White trash" is an American colloquial expression for a social-economic type, there is actually no black or should I say BAME (!) equivalent

and yes it is the home of such people - the people who are too awful even for modern day Channel 4.

I think the equivalent is 'Ghetto Blacks'.

Female 'white trash' in USA are called 'ratchets' which can refer to both black and white.

    Check out tonight's edifying line-up:

    7.00 Police Interceptors
    8.00 Britain's Horror Homes
9.00 Benefits and Bypasses: Billion Pound Patients
10.00 My Sister Had My Boyfriend's Baby..and other betrayals
    11.00 OAPs Behaving Badly
    11.55 Glasgow's Killing Streets

Reads like a piss-take but chavically it's all too true. Tomorrow's isn't any better:

    7.00 GPs Behind Closed Doors
8.00 The Nightmare Neighbour Next Door
    9.00 OAPs Behaving Badly
10.00 Dangerous Dog Owners and Proud
11.00 Benefits and Bypasses: Billion Pound Patients
12.00 My Sister Had My Boyfriend's Baby..and other betrayals

Indefensible really and yet they continue to broadcast, taking up space a decent channel could be using.

Indefensible ?? For heaven's sake, it's about choice. If you don't like what's being offered on two nights out of 365, watch one of the many other options.

Also it might be convenient to cherrypick its less worthy offerings to suit a certain argument, but that's an incredibly transparent approach.

I believe they have a 'Brazen Britain' season running at the moment which links a lot of these documentaries, which obviously results in a less diverse schedule than would otherwise be the case.

But generally speaking I think you'll find C5 has a more diverse primetime schedule than any of the other major channels, and one that is likely to continue to evolve under its new owners and following its upcoming rebrand.

I was going to put "someone will be along shortly to defend them to the hilt" but thought that even you would struggle to defend that shitty line-up. Seems I was wrong.

I didn't cherry-pick anything - That's their schedule in full for two concurrent nights that mark themselves out as particularly shameful.

You must be knackered defending them all the time.

I wouldn't say GPs Behind Closed Doors is a trashy documentary, certainly not in the same league as the benefits stuff.

Agree with all you say on this subject, Straker. That anyone would even want to defend this muck is beyond me, and something I find very sad.

The fact these programmes actually appear to have an audience (or C5 would try something else) is despair worthy.

I find it even sadder that a whole channel could be dismissed as trash based on two nights worth of schedules. Not to mention the ludicrous suggestion their licence should be revoked.

C5 is nowhere near as bad as is made out by the same few posters on here and I think whilst it was very fashionable for a while to knock it at every opportunity there's now a growing contingent on these boards who can see its strengths and its potential going forwards with more money behind it.

Also if we must cherrypick I don't think any of the programmes listed above are as desperate sounding as last night's 9pm offering on C4 - "My Big Fat Gypsy Grand National." WTF?

Police Interceptors is the only one I have any interest in, and that isn't as good as it used to be now either.

It's not cherry-picking it's the general shape of the schedule. C5 just ran a promo for Spike TV which seems more of the same. Be it Viacom or CBS they seem to go for the worst in trash TV, the pretence these channels are uplifting aimed at an astute 16-24 year olds is a load of marketing talk.

How about C5 investing in some of the successful European dramas rather than the formulaic Amercian ones?
