Anyone know for definite if all practice sessions will still be on 5 Live Sports Extra (cricket permitting)? I don't have any reason to suppose they won't, except the lack of any mention in the stories today.

Melbourne has FP2, Qualifying and Race on radio.

It's completely subjective though....there is no quantifiable way to 'prove' one side is better. It's very shaky ground to state one side better when they don't even cover all the races live.

The comments in bold are what typically irks me about this thread. It's basic psychology...

People who won't pay out for a more expensive product find it unpalatable to admit the other side may be better.

People who pay more for a product are hardly likely to say they prefer the cheaper option as it undermines their reasoning for purchasing in the first place.

Ben Edwards is utter marmite to many people, same as DC, same as every other F1 personality on our screens. They've become 'weapons' to 'prove' your choosen stable is 'better'.

Bored of it now.....I suppose there's always the ignore function.

Not to throw oil on the fire, but put it this way. I am lucky enough to have Sky Sports F1HD. When the races are live on SSF1HD only, that's where I will watch, when the BBC have live practice, qualy and the race, I will watch the BBC.

I always watch Ted's Notebook regardless of whether the BBC are live or not, and I always watch the Forum. Big race moments I watch both broadcasters to see how DC/MB and BE/DC called the action.

I guess a lot of us on here are the same, but we are all (and I think everyone would agree) are pretty much hardcore F1 geeks (especially for the broadcasting aspect of the sport)!

    Ive settled into a routine of watching;

FP1> BBC for Ben and Wattie
    FP2+3> Sky
Buildup> BBC, then Sky for Brundle's grid walk
    Race> Sky for Brundle
    Post> Both
    Forum

Then i watch it again on the BBC. :D

Wonderful. Always really useful especially on non-F1 weekends. Glad to see he's updated it for 2013.

Is a shame that WSBR isnt on there though.

Must comment on Sky's testing coverage as my last post was a bit BBC-biased :o. It was brilliant. Kudos to them for showing the testing live, I thoroughly enjoyed it while it was. I spent Friday afternoon curled up on the sofa with a pizza, couple of drinks, my BBC F1 Season Preview Mag and Sky Sports F1 HD on the telly enjoying it immensely. David's commentary was witty, informative and interesting. I wasn't expecting to hear Martin alongside him so was pretty pleased. Ted's Notebooks as well - top class. I hope Sky will be showing next years tests live. Bring on Melbourne. I'll be watching quali on BBC, the race on Sky and highlights on BBC. Can't watch practice as we only have Sky on the downstairs TV but might find a SSF1HD stream online and watch it on my TV through the PS3. Just over a week to go, excited everyone?

Well put - agree with it all 100%

Sooo bored now with all the back and forth "my channel is better than yours" stuff and poeple passing off their stated preference as fact..

people "apologising to the Sky fans but..." for their alternative view - as if they are totally correct and people who have a different view need to be patted on the head and corrected - so condecending.

Let the season start - so we can actually debate real coverage not waste time with petty "my dads better than yours " stuff.

Are you totally faultless in that regard?

Tom Clarkson joins the BBC TV team full time while Allan McNish is the new co-commentator for 5 Live.

Pleasantly surprised to see Clarkson join the team. Having Gary covering all things technical and Tom on strategy/pit duty means they should have all bases covered which wasn't necessarily the case last year. Marc Priestley's welcome appearance at testing and the success of Ted's Development Corner has shown there's plenty of reason to have a technical/aerodynamic specialist and I'd like to see Sky do much more of this in the future with Priestley or even Craig Scarborough.

I hadn't thought of McNish for the 5 Live job but I found him at least as good as Davidson on practice commentary in Brazil so he's a good choice but it looks like he'll very much be part-time this season. These new recruitments together with practice in HD will make choosing where to watch practice on shared weekends much tougher than last year.

    Schedule notes...
    - Classic races to expand into strands, starting with 'debut wins' - 2003 Hungary and 2007 Canada currently listed for 28th/29th March
This sounds like a promising concept. Hopefully they'll use it to find a way of showing classic races from Grand Prix that are no longer on the calendar, e.g. San Marino, Austria, France, Mexico, etc.
With the talk of Sky adding HD Red Button feeds, Im hoping there able to get rid of the red borders.
Agreed. I'd much prefer to see onboards and the pit channel without intrusion and in full HD rather than scaling them down to fit a red border around them.

Speaking of onboards HD it should be noted than, in Italy, Sky will offer their multichannel choice ONLY to HD subscribers, meaning that their extra feeds will be broadcasted in HD only (whether this means the content will be in Native HD is yet to be seen though, we'll find out next week).

Good to see the FTA deal in Italy, seems very much near identical to the UK model. Let's just hope from 2017/8 we keep the same sort of deals- I can't see it ever going back to FTA only but having two broadcasters in each territory can only keep improving overall coverage in every way.

Well done for sky for their testing coverage, got the commentary right, and Teds notebook great as ever.

Great news about Tom Clarkson, also a good call getting McNish for the radio. Sensible strengthening of where the BBC were weak last year.

For me I think it'll be a similar viewing plan as last year, though probably spending less time with Sky (which really shouldn't be the case considering their investment). Losing Georgie while keeping Lazenby makes no sense to me, and will be largely fast forwarding or forgetting about F1 show now. Will pretty much only be watching the Gridwalk and Teds Notebook on Sky and everything else on BBC (and the Gridwalk is often better on BBC when they're live now).

Just a quick note to say Suzi Perry is live on BBC Breakfast this morning at 7:30 to talk about her new role this season if anyone's interested...

Just watched that, Suzi was quite sensible and did that well, especially as she had to handle some poor questioning and the one about women in F1, typically stuffy old BBC that. But Suzi impressed with her answer on that and how she will plan out the year.

She did quite well and didn't pretend to be a know all about the sport, the sports reporter look a bit annoyed when Louise and Charlie butted in with there rather lame questions.. I'm looking forward to see her on the grid live in china..

"Typical stuffy old BBC"? The same BBC who now have a woman presenter of their F1?

Anyway, it's not the BBC who asks the questions, it's the presenter.

There will always be debate about who's coverage is best as long as F1 is on two channels. It's human nature and a part of what forums are about.
It was the same back in the early 90's when BBC had around 9 live races and Eurosport showed all 16 live plus qualifying and a lot of practice and an evening magazine show on both Friday and Saturday. Except the 'who's best' debate took place in the letters pages of the various motor racing magazines that the internet has now mostly killed off.
On that subject I've spotted two new mags - Formula Magazine and GP International - both monthly.
On Eurosport in the 90's John Watson was the sidekick to Ben Edwards among a string of other leads. And there were adverts in the race just like ITV.

Agree, for me its what this forum is all about and I like the banter and reading all the differing views.
I very much like the way this forum works, especially the updates from the few, as like many it saves me a lot of time scanning the web for it myself.

On that, I found a few BBC radio broadcasts on youtube from Croft, but none form last few years. Anyone have a link?
Croft carried it pretty well really, but then I'm ok with him. As I said before though F1 and radio don't mix for me. But it would be nice to hear a more recent one. Will not have time to listen when the season is on, so now is a good time to compare.

Whilst true, that wasn't because of the contract - but because of the timezone.

Speak for yourself... we were having broadcaster arguments back in the days of bulletin boards! Paper was already passé by 1994 ;)

Yes, true. Apart from the French GP which although in the perfect slot for live coverage, tended to lose out to live Wimbledon coverage. I quite like Tennis now though having been converted by the missus. Mind you, I converted her to F1 so fair's fair. We'll be at the French Open this year - ticket prices not dissimilar to F1 unfortunately.

Another fond memory from even earlier days was the TV announcer explaining that as the live Cricket was rained off, they were going live to Motor Racing. Bliss.

I thought I'd join in, since I have been reading this thread since Botty first asked what everyone thought. Granted I did post back in the F1 Dig+ days, but I have forgotten my username let alone password, so I doubt anyone else would remember me.

I'm a big fan of the BBC coverage. Been a Ben fan since the 90's and thought the commentary has improved immensely since he came on board. One of the few redeeming features of Setanta F1 is that we got Ben and DC live for every race. The BBC will always have my heart, and I look forward to their 9 live races this year. But...

I just took the plunge and subscribed to Sky Sports. The addition of a Lions tour this summer may have helped, but if I paid €20 a race back in '02, surely an extra €35 a month can be justified. I wasn't married in '02 though, so we'll see how long it lasts. For now, I have the F1 Channel!

My first impressions on watching the testing coverage last weekend. Ted Kravitz seems to be in his element, really enjoyed Ted's notebook. Croft sounded strange to me not all echoing and full of static, disappearing every time you drive under a railway bridge (5live hasnt the best reception in Dublin), but I liked his pace of commentary. Brundle seemed quiet, maybe just because it's testing, although I was never a big fan of his style. Looking forward to the grid walks again. Didn't really see enough of the rest of the presenters to form an opinion. Can't wait until Australia now, also can't believe that this is the 6th Aussie Grand Prix since I attended the 2007 event, and watched this young German test driver called Sebastian Vettel be interviewed about his hope to get a drive in F1.

Looking forward to chatting over the year, as I argue with myself over who has the better coverage, Sky, the BBC or Setanta ;)

Good for R5L listeners that McNish is joining - bad for Sky viewers that they're not going to see him. Of all the pundits, experts and ex-drivers hands that Sky put a microphone in, McNish was one of the best.

On a slightly random note, noone else surprised that Formula1.com is still peddling the slightly fanciful notion that the TBA race is still, well, TBA, and not just quietly forgotten about? It's forcing others to keep pretending too, such as the BBC, since in theory they're showing the TBA race. But I can't see it happening now, surely?
