i have been suffering with a problem with my back for about 8 months now. It was so mild at first it didnt bother me but recently its got so bad its affecting my life all the time.
I find i am fine until i walk somewhere, as soon as i walk a couple of hundred yards I get severe discomfort in the base of my spine, its like something is rubbing together. To stop it from hurting i have to sit down or bend over, which feels like i am stretching my spine out again, stopping the discomfort. I have been to the doctors about it & she said i still have good movement, which i did have in the surgery cos I wasnt walking anywhere!
I have been given anti inflamitary tablets & co-codomol but so far they are not making any difference whatsoever. I am overweight, & am trying to do something about that but at the moment i cant do the exercise to go with the healthy eating! I used to love walking & now i can barely get to the corner shop!!!
I also suffer from depression & this isnt helping, I used to like going for a walk to clear my head & not being able to go anywhere is upsetting me. Any advice would be appreciated, has anyone suffered something like this, & got some info on how i can stop this discomfort from happening?

Is the pain across the base of your spine, or concentrated down one side?

I had a lower back problem for years, I went to see a chiropractor, and he administered acupuncture.
It turned out I had a trapped sciatic nerve, and after about 3 months of sessions, everything is fine.

If the pain is more to one side, and even into your leg, then that is one of the symptoms of sciatica, but there are so many causes of back pain.

I would go back to your doctor and get them to refer you to a back specialist, they will be able to diagnose much better.

Its very central at the base of my back, not to either side at all. i think i will go back to the docs on Tues, its really affecting my day to day life now.

I would recommend that you see an osteopath as soon as you can. I'm sure they will sort it out for you soon.

Doctors will only give you meds to begin with, but they should refer you to a specialist if you go back again.

I would agree in going back to the doctor. I expect they see lots of patients with back problems that go away after a few days so don't refer you on the first visit. As its not improving I am sure they will have another look. Some back pain can be improved with physio and learning simple stretching exercises. I have had lower back pain in the past, and now if I feel it starting I spend 5 minutes doing the exercise and it eases it off, and is a reminder to be more careful. We should all do warm up type stretching every day.
But I wouldn't suggest trying anything without the doctor checking you out first.
