It means an obsessive/over the top/stalker type fan of an artist. Taken from the Eminem song of the same name.

It was his name, I'm sure he signs his letters off saying 'Stan.' It's just a play on words too, because it can also be a portmanteau of stalker/fan.

And now, people who love a particular celebrity have taken the name and they are that celebrity's 'stans'

It was his name in the song, he says in one of the verses:
    Truly yours, your biggest fan
    This is Stan

When people refer to themselves as a stan now, I don't think they mean it like in the song. I'm sure most people wouldn't go crazy over a singer.

To all who qouted me: I still stand by what I said, those are only a few people. Most people aren't as silly as that and even the crazy ones probably only act like that because the Internet is anonymous. Chris Crocker was just an attention seeker.

I agree Stan is used loosely now. A fan is now a casual fan. Stan is more of a diehard fan.

Having said that, the character Stan from the Eminem video wasn't on the Internet either. He sent all his correspondence by snail mail.
