I want to second Born Again. Frank Millar was pretty much given a free reign when he wrote Daredevil and he produced some of the best crime comics ever. Born Again is the perfect story of how a hero can be systematically broken down. The come back is awesome.
I am a Batman fanatic, so apologies these are mostly Batman graphics! :cool:
Joker (Bremjo, Azzarello),*
The Killing Joke,
The Long Halloween,
Arkham Asylum - A serious House On A serious Earth (Special edition)*,
Batman: Year One;
Batman: Year Two,
Sam and Twitch cases,
The Watchmen,
From Hell,
Gotham By Gaslight,
Castle of The Bat,
I haven't checked anyone elses reccomendations, but I strongly suggest Joker - Brilliant and gritty novel told by Jonny Frost (hired goon) following Joker, Batman make's a brief cameo, but this Joker is more like Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight.
Arkham Asylum - A serious house on a serious earth. The art is amazing, and the story is just down right freaky and make's you think, with massive influinces from Alice In Wonderland, a strong horror batman novel
