Becoming a parent makes you a better person

I've just seen Caitlin Moran come out with this comment in an interview in Good Housekeeping. If someone said 'not having children makes you a better person' I'm sure people would have something to say about it.

Why is it okay for parents to say things like this?

Do they ever think how insulting that is to people who can't have children, or who, for various reasons, have just never become parents.

I think it's ok to say that about herself, as an individual, but not in general. Becoming a parent does make some people become better people, they can become less selfish, more motivated, more interested in wider interests, etc. That isn't true of everybody though, clearly there are some nasty people around who just happen to be parents.

Since having kids I've become more patient, that's for sure. And my knowledge of Peppa Pig and Paw Patrol has gone through the roof.

Pretty sure I'd still be the same asshole I am now if I had kids. Which is one of the reasons I never intend to.

I agree. But she said this as a general sweeping statement. Not that she, herself, had been impatient/selfish/lazy before she had children and had changed afterwards.

You do realise it's just one person's opinion - she's not speaking for all parents. For some people I genuinely DO think it makes them a better person. On the flip side, I'm sure there are many people who have had kids and have turned into utter arseholes.

But she said this as a general sweeping statement. .

She is a journalist specialising in opinion pieces. General sweeping statements are the biggest part of the job.

I wouldn't say that having kids betters people in general - some parents are absolutely vile people of course - but, for me, becoming a father definitely made me much more of a better person in many ways.

Meh, just ignore it. You'll never agree with everything you read and hear.

It's one of those little mantras parents have developed to comfort themselves during the "Why ever did I have kids in the first place?" moments. :D:D:D

I dunno, it sort of does really in a way.
She's not saying childless people are bad is she ? just that having a child does improve you in some ways, I don't see how that's insulting really unless you're going out of your way to be insulted.

It's just an opinion, and a very generalised one at that. She's not said that not having kids makes you a bad person, or that people who don't have kids are bad people, just that having kids, with all that entails, improves people. Taking any one factor, patience for example, as mentioned earlier, those who have kids may see their patience improve. That's not to say those without kids are all impatient though. She's not said that having kids is the only way one can become a better person either, so for those you've mentioned, there's still many avenues of self improvement open to them besides procreation should they choose to.

I don't use this mantra during such moments. I use alcohol. It's far more effective.

It does make you p0nder about nature versus nurture though, would they have grown up to be the same monsters if they'd had a more nurturing upbringing that wasn';t so abusive and incestuous?

Do you give it to the kids or drink it yourself? It strikes me either woudl be effective. :D

It was the Tweenies back when mine were young. We even paid a visit to a tiny dinosaur museum in Dorset after Max went there during one episode. :D

I probably know all there is to know about Power Rangers Ninja Storm too.:D

I've suggested to my wife on many an occasion that we should lace their milk with vodka to get them to sleep better. I've been shouted down.

Although my little sod of a 5 year-old daughter will drink my beer or wine at any chance she gets.

Having kids would be far too much stress for me to be able to become a better person.

Perhaps the necessity of the situation would make you better able to handle stress, and thus a better person..

.. or indeed, if they had never met each other.
