"I am confident that we are in a year of transition and I fully expect guitar-based acts to start rising in popularity again," Ergatoudis told DS.
"The public is beginning to tire of the formulaic sounds that make up much of the Top 40 singles chart and we have audience research to back this up.
"They want more variety and that's good news for Radio 1. Having said that I don't think we'll see the important guitar acts of this decade really smashing it until 2015."

No I think it will happen. You just have to look at the way music labels have started to market new acts to see the generic dance wave is about to die out.
Good! Bout time they diversified a little more, it's all ackin dron own a daynce flow in an clurrrrrb at the moment.
Hopefully they will play stuff like Airbournes kind of rock as well Bullet for my Valentine type of rock too.
Don't worry. It died when you stated you were an Atomic Kitten & Britney Spears fan.
This electro/ dupstep/ dance phase is slowly dying but it's looking more likely that indie styled music or slow acoustic music/ big voice ballads will take centre stage.
I mean it's not like there was skiffle bands and folk rock... then blues and honkytonk.... then boy bands... then prog rock... then metal... then punk... then thrash... their hair metal... then garage band lo fi rock... then grunge... then indie... then nu metal... then a revival of garage rock and indie...
It's not like dance music goes in trends either... except for disco... and then rave... and then house... and then garage... and then trance... and then synth europop... and now dubstep...
Or hip hop... and then storytelling rap... and then gangsta rap... and then crack rap... and then rap metal... and then club rap... and then rap/r n b duets... and then grime in the UK and trap rap in the USA...
What an observant man he must be, certainly none of us could foresee this. In other news, water is still wet in case anyone was curious.
Dance fading and guitar music getting more popular kind of go hand in hand. And then at the end of the decade it will go in the other direction again.
I don't think we should expect a comeback of rock music though. It'll be more like the indie-pop like we had in the mid-00s imo. But it's obviously starting to happen.
my thoughts exactly.... without a headline act to kick it up the arse all we will get is more generic 'indie'.
... but in saying what i just have, when generic indie is done right, it makes for good pop. i liked the kaisers, razorlight, hard fi, even the kooks...
Rock music never went away, that is why 100,000+ go to Download every year. But then Radio 1 has always ignored Hard Rock / Heavy Metal anyway.
But you are right, it will be the lighter end of rock music but I am quite sure Rock fans and the likes of Ergatoudis will never see eye to eye on who the "important guitar acts" are!
.
Agree, all this announcement is about is a change in radio 1's playlist policy. Which I may add, sounds like a very good change.
I for one am looking forward to hearing all these "important" guitar bands. We may even see the return of The Kooks and Kaiser Chiefs to the charts. Deep joy.
i'd take the kooks or the kaiser chiefs over 99% of the crap thats in the charts at the moment
Im not a ''fan'' of either it was under the circumstances of the thread - infact my taste is actually quite varied, but um... thanks for creeping through my old posts, how sane of you.
True! Yes, the acoustic folky thing is popular now but I've always found that kind of music boring. One or two acoustic songs on an album is okay but not a whole album. I prefer more electric guitar driven rock music. It's more exciting, especially live!
