The Wolf of Wall Street - (New Scorsese Film)

Anyone looking forward to this? Most of the reviews from the US have been broadly positive. I get the feeling that it might be a bit overlong at 3 hours. Also it nearly got a NC-17 certificate in the US - so that caused a bit of a fuss and it had to be cut. In the UK, it looks like it is uncut and an 18. We're getting full-on hardcore Scorsese. It looks likely that the film is a sort of "Goodfellas with stockbrokers". Leo is supposed to give a good performance int his - he has come along way with Scorsese and turned into a pretty decent actor.

I'm really looking forward to this. I think the trailer is the best one I've ever seen - the shots, the music - excellent.

Screener must be any day now.
Dallas Buyers Club has just appeared so there's very few hotly tipped movies still to show up online.

Thank you. Must see American Hustle this weekend, maybe Hobbit again next weekend and then it'll all be about The Wolf of Wall Street.

this film looks annoying going by the trailer. a lot of loud flashy bull then the downfall, its all been done before. I don't mind Leo these days but cocky Leo is irritating.

That's because most people who work in Wall street are cocky arrogant people. It's the nature of the business.

    Agree.

Really? Do we believe this? And if so do we need a big movie to glorify them? Should we all admire it?

I reckon this looks absolutely dreadful. Predictable and trashy.

 It's just another rise-and-fall tale of a real-life criminal during an era of excess.

No different from other biographical / true crime films. Such as Casino, Reversal of Fortune, I Shot Andy Warhol, Catch Me If You Can, Dog Day Afternoon, Onion Field and so on.

The Wolf of Wall Street breaks the record for the most F words in a film:

    Impressive :D

You can't tell much about a film from the trailer in many cases. I agree that it looks over-stylised and daft but I have faith in Scorsese as a director.

The trailers are put together by marketing droids and they don't always reflect the whole film.

Having a film about something, doesn't automatically glorify it. If you think the portrayal in this film is glorious, that says more about you than it does the film. That's not the emotion you're supposed to feel about their antics.

Do we really believe this? The subjects of this film are particularly egregious examples, not meant to be just random representatives. But they are exemplars of a very real culture of callous exploitation and hedonism. The people highly placed in that industry are mostly not very pleasant human beings, and some not-insignificant minority are terrible.

    Don't think it is.

I wouldn't say shitty. It was a great copy. But then i am not bothered whether it is TS or not.

I really enjoyed the film. Leo and Jonah Hill are brilliant. Main issue is how long it is. It is 2 hours and 44 minutes. 44 of those minutes could easily be cut and it wouldn't hurt the film.

Is there anyone who's seen both Wolf of Wall Street AND American Hustle? If anyone has, which one do you think is better?

Overall, I would say American Hustle is probably the better film. Neither is without flaws. American Hustle was a bit aimless, so it was all about character rather than plot, and some characters were more developed than others. There were some enjoyable things about both.

It does seem to me that American Hustle is more of a character driven ensemble piece whereas Wolf of Wall Street is a 3 hour assault of DiCaprio committing debauchery (at least that's the impression I get from the reviews).
