NHS Dentists

Ok I am aware that this is going to sound a bit pathetic as a grown man not knowing, but how on earth do I go about finding a good NHS dentist near to where I live?

I've already googled and have what seems like a load of recommendations but when you look closer they say not accepting NHS patients. I've called 4 or 5 and its the same.

I haven't been to the dentist since I moved house (naughty me) and have no idea where to find a good one that won't cost the earth.

Are there any websites/ forums that are good for this? (I have already tried NHS choices and most seem to be private or not accepting new NHS patients).
Does anyone qualify for an NHS one or are there rules as to who qualifies re earnings etc?

Thanks in advance.

I was going to say try NHS but you already have. My local borough website lists NHS dentists, maybe try your own borough's website.

Dont think there are any rules, it just depends if the practise offers NHS or not (not being mainly the case).

I think it will just be a case of getting a list of NHS Dentists near you and phoning up and asking if they have and vacancies.
Or how about asking those you work with and/or those you socialise with who their Dentist is and if the Dentist is NHS and would they recommend using them.

Thanks to you both for replying. I appreciate it.

rds60h- I've already asked around my mates who live close to me and their dentists are not accepting any new patients. Frustrating. I suppose I could ask round my work colleagues also but planning on moving jobs soon so would much rather get one on my doorstep.

I thought this would be pretty straightforward but it's a bit of a mare. I mean how hard should it be?!

It could be difficult to find a bad one - never mind a good one!

Come to Crete for a holiday. Dental treatment costs half as much here as in the UK!
    :)

Ha ha, probably the best offer I'm ever likely to get on DS! :D

Thanks- I'd already tried half the dentists that came up on this and they were either not talking patients and some even said they didn't do NHS which seemed a bit odd as they were on the list. Not finding one withing a relatively short space of time kinda led to this thread.

Perhaps I will just have to suck it up and call each and every one on this list till I find one. I swear it never used to be this much of a pain in the posterior. :(

I appreciate the reply though, so thank you..

Try the CAB, which might seem an odd suggestion, but a lot of people get this problem, and CABs are a hub for all kinds of problems and solutions within their respective areas.

You only have to see an NHS dentist once a year now instead of every 9 months, well that's what mine has told me so does it have to be on your doorstep if it's only for check ups?

Dentists in the the area I moved to weren't taking on NHS patients but luckily the dentist in my home town took me back after I'd been private for a bit before the move. It's a bit far but I combine it with a family visit as well.

I don't remember whereabouts exactly but somewhere on the site that Irvine posted there was a place to stick your details so they would put you on a local waiting list and contact you when a place becomes available.

I couldn't get a NHS dentist for love nor money but got a place after about 6 months on the list.

Thanks grotbags- you make a very good point. I guess I don't HAVE to have one on my doorstep as it's not like I'd need to go all the time, you are right I have a car so anywhere that is not a million miles away that won't cost me the equivalent of a small deposit on a house would be great!

I like to consider myself man of the world so it's kinda embarrassing I've had to ask how to find an NHS dentist. This time, google was NOT my friend! :(

Hmm, I'm pretty certain I need a filling.so not sure I can wait all that long. I perhaps should have posted this thread 6 months ago! May as well put my name down anyway and see if I can find a temp one in the meantime! :D

I know a very good NHS dentist in Romford if you live anywhere near there. I have never had a better experience with any dentist in England. You can always get an appointment too and he is lovely.

Thank you both as well. Never did I think I would actually get so many decent and actually genuinely useful replies.

DS Advice section- I will never doubt you again!

Ryja-I never thought about asking a chemist. Good thinking- thanks.

Romford's a bit far for me but if all else fails I appreciate the heads up Xela, and may have to put this as my back up plan! ;-)

I don't know what part of the country you are in AOTB. Is SW London a better option than Romford? :)

Yes it would- I live in Richmond (which is pretty much West London) so anywhere SW London would be perfect!

    Hi,

I could recommend a fantastic NHS dentist in Hammersmith if your willing to travel there. PM if you want details and they do have space at the moment.

It's in the Balham/Clapham area, I will PM you the details later when I get home. I am a little constricted using this phone. :)with the Hammersmith one above, you'll soon have a choice. :)

Great to see a thread where OP has asked for advice and been given it without somebody posting sarky remarks and it looks like a solution has been found, so well done everyone !!

    Hi,

I just wanted to pop back on this thread to say thank you to all who took the time to post your genuinely helpful advice. I think pretty much each and every post was useful!

I now have an appointment with my new NHS dentist to get my pearly whites, well pearly and white- just like this chap here ---> :D

Thanks to you all- esp those who PM'd me with some addresses etc.

My faith in the advice section on DS has been restored! :)
