Incidentally, England are playing 8 left-handed batsmen, whilst the 5 frontline bowlers all bowl right-handed and bat left-handed.

Has to be a first surely?

    that is quite weird actually

maybe some of the batsmen should try batting the other way around too

Bit of a shock, Harris playing 5 tests in a row? Wouldn't have got great odds on that. Great for him though.

Spreads quoting Australia runs at 325-340 with the fall of the 1st wicket at 39-44

Think we need to get them out for less than that to justify putting them in

    No bet from me

    Confidence in England !!

runs have been sold and are now trading at 318- 333

Anyone else thinking bowling first was a mistake?

The commentators here are not expecting any demons in the pitch early. Mark Taylor says he likes batting on the first day on this ground.

good bowling from broad , got hit for a couple of boundaries but when there is sideways movement you want to keep pitching it up and getting the batsman to try and drive

    good to get warner early

Great ball. Broad must have been sorely tempted to give Warner a big send-off. Glad he didn't.

Broad has been the only England player who I would say has played really well throughout this series

So......England haven't got a single LBW during the series

Strauss reckons it's because they're not bowling at the wicket

McGrath used to say when people asked him what the secret of his success was that he just bowled at the top of off stump. He was doing himself a bit of a disservice, but the gist of it is true. Too many bowlers seem to forget it.

Looks like Cook's gamble in bowling first has not worked.

They bowled too short in Melbourne and they are still doing it.

It's too early to tell if bowling first has worked. If Aus is all out for 250 at stumps England will be happy enough.

Once again our bowlers aren't bowling the right line or length. Wasted opportunity

.....get another couple before lunch and we're still in this !

I just feel that if the Aussies are still batting at stumps we might as well call it a day......:o

kinda ironic that the one piece most people said England were missing for the last 2-3 years when we were relatively successful was a 5th bowler who could bat at #6 , and now we seem to have found one the rest of the team has fallen apart

Given the difficulty we have had in finishing off the Australian tail, I wouldn't be surprised if we had them at 150-6, only for the tail to get the total to 300+

and that makes the decision to bowl first a good one

    94-4 at lunch
