Anything by Takashi Miike tends to be enjoyable stuff (Ichi The Killer, Visitor Q), if a bit gory or bizarre.

Away from Miike, I recommend Battle Royale (the new 3-Disc Limited DVD gives it the respect it deserves), and the original The Eye series. :)

It's utterly bonkers (as with much Asian cinema), but I really like Casshern, kind of like a non-animated Akira.

Recently discovered an interesting Korean take on Hansel and Gretel:

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1002567/

A fairytale for kids it is not! Creepy.

I've got another recommendation, 9 Souls

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0370244/
Nine convicts escape from prison; most are convicted murders. They commandeer a van from a strip club. Their plan is to find a stash of counterfeit money that a deranged cell mate told them about, divide it, then part ways. They make it to the site where the money is supposed to be hidden, and then one by one, each seeks out the place he wants to be, a version of home, somewhere to connect. Will it end well for any of them?

    I really enjoyed this movie
