One of the recurring themes of the modern series is the Doctor picking up someone who wants to travel, who yearns to see the stars - basically, the Doctor can make their dreams come true, or at least show off to them. One thing I liked about Donna is that she was the complete opposite of that.
She was completely blind to the greater world, she lived in her bubble of reality television, gossip and career apathy. She noticed nothing. In some ways, she was the complete opposite of the Doctor. And yet, he opened her eyes in their first meeting, made her realise that she could be so much more. He pulled her up, while she grounded him. They complemented each other well.
