Boris,Coe,Hunt Press Conference - Hunt "UK Not Best"

Am I right in believing that at the morning press conference today, with Jeremy Hunt, Seb Coe and Boris Johnson, the Culture Secretary and Cabinet Minister in a British Government has actually sat down and said to the world that the Sydney Olympics were better than our own London Games?

Can this man really be so stupid to say aloud such a thing, even if he thought it, his mouth should have stayed shut.

I thought that also - but as he was "dead man walking" anyway in the coming government reshuffle does anyone really care what he thinks?

No, that's not right. Boris Johnson diplomaticically said that he understood why the mayor of Sydney would say that the 2000 Olympics were still the best. Jeremy Hunt then chimed in with the observation that the Sydney Olympics were indeed the best ever - in the the year 2000 (i.e. they were the best so far, at the time). He had the look on his face of a man who thought he'd just delivered a brilliant line, but I think half the journalists in the room didn't get it.

The Olympics correspondent on the local BBC news said that he asked Jeremy Hunt a question about whether there could be more joined up thinking in the funding for sport so money from the Home Office, the Department of Health and the Ministry of Culture Media and Sport being pooled to do a more effective job and Hunt told him off for being negative after two weeks of wonderful sport.

The BBC guy said the issue needed a more mature response than that.

Thanks, I was told that he had just said this as I walked in the room and did not see it first hand. The person who saw it swore blind it was correct what she heard Hunt say, but having seen no reaction in the madia afterwards I decided to test the waters and find out on DS.
Because if Hunt really did say that on the morning after our Olympics finish then I would expect the media storm to start swirling around him pretty fast. He looks a fool anyway. I hope it's not a case of trying to pretend he didn't say something that he patently did.
Thanks for the info on it so far.

Just to say that the end of the press conference I did see made Hunt and Coe look a pair of utterly out of touch posh boys. Thank Christ for Boris. The Mobot part was him all over. Coe's reaction to it said much about his perceived self importance and lack of any humour.

Hunt said the Sydney games were the best of 2000.

It does make me sick. Its Tessa Jowel I feel for. She did so much hard work for these games and has barely had any praise at all these past weeks.

It sounds like another sense of humour bypass from our press, but even if he said it - so what? Other cities will put on amazing Games, but I will always think ours were the best, because they were ours!

Livingstone doesn't deserve any particular bother. He said just prior to the Games that "I've never been particulary into sport anyway". Sour grapes at not being Olympic mayor I think.
