What's wrong with my DVD player?

Over the last week or so, my Compak DVD5000 has been giving me a lot of grief.
It started first when it wouldn't power up properly but after I switched it on and off a few times it was fine. However, now I would have to switch it on and off about a hundred times before it finally"boots up", but now it just stops playing the disc after about 20 mins.
Obviously I'll have to get it fixed, but does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be?

I am not an dvd engineer but it the problem may be with the electronics and not the laser. Which is good as that is the most common fault and expensive.
