Are the games used with a DS Lite and a DSi interchangeable?
The DS games are all compatible with any DS (and 3DS too) but the old DS lite had a cartridge slot for Gameboy Advance (GBA) games too, which Nintendo discontinued with the DSi (and above) so if you have any of those games, no they won't play on the DSi.
Also there were a handful of DSi enhanced games released, which I believe were for the DSi only (or may simply have DSi exclusive features) but there were never many of these anyway, they make up just a tiny fraction of the thousands strong DS games library.
Yeah, the 3DS (3DS and 3DS XL) are completely different console to the DS line (DS, DS Lite, DSi, DSiXL). The 3DS can play DS games but not the other way round - it's far more powerful.

I really want to try Fire Emblem Awakenings. Can I use that in my DS or do I need a DS 3D? I'm confused by all the different variations of the DS
Thanks!
No the 3DS game cards have an extra tab on them so they will only fit in a 3DS but DS cards can also be used on a 3DS.
