Does anyone know why sky HD boxes have a USB port under the little panel on the front? I tried connecting a few things to it but nothing happens.what's the point of it?

    It's for future use,
Incase sky ever want to use it for anything.

Indeed, like the one on the back, that hasn't had any use (apart from on some boxes it was powered, so people plugges fans or chargers into it), until now, where it is enabled to connect to the wifi adapter.

And the Ethernet port, that didn't have a use until Anytime+ launched.

So what future use could it be for? Connecting to internet, downloading recorded stuff to a memory stick? Or......can't really think of anything else.

As has been posted on this forum many times over the years - the USB port was added to the spec on the Sky+ PVR3 boxes (the 160GB SD ones) and was intended for connection of a portable media player. Pace developed such a device and exhibited it working at an electronics show - unfortunately it was never put into production because of rights issues. The port has been left in case the rights issue is ever sorted and the rear one has now actually been used for the WiFi connector. on the DRX890/895.

Yes, we were shown a mockup of it, and told it was all going ahead - next thing we heard was it had been cancelled due to unresolvable rights issues.

Anyone remember the old Interactive card slots? Now they were a white elephant. I only ever heard of them being used once and very briefly at that.

IIRC the interactive slot was used very briefly, as you say, by one of the shopping channels.
    :)

Don't forget the Sky credit card, to check your account.

It was intended for use with a Mondex card, the idea being you could pay for credit on the card, and then use it for PPV etc.
