They still haven't sorted out the sound on the new Sky News Tonight. Sound like they are broadcasting from the toilet.

Also I'm hoping Sarah Hewson is very pregnant, either that or she needs to ease off on the burgers :)

Sky News was at its best in the late 90s/very early 2000s. I used to have it as my 'default' TV channel in the background if I wasn't watching anything in particular, and it would be the first channel I went to for any kind of news.

Now, I don't bother with it even when I want news - I'll go online (to another provider) or watch BBC. Sky News seriously needs a major overhaul. The studio they moved in to in 2005(?) was always dull and uninspired. The music, gaudy yellow 'breaking news' straps and constant advertising of sky.com/news in their intros is annoying - if I want to go on the internet, I will go on the internet!

Back to the 1997-2000 era, shows like 'Your Call' were always interesting, the presentation was a lot more engaging and Sky News felt authoritative.

Have to agree, their 9/11 coverage especially with Emma Hurd (badly under used) was very good.

They seem an odd station now, often breaking away from say a live press conference to go to an advert break, everyone then switches to the BBC.

They need new blood, that new evening show is just not working for me, Sky have struggled to get that slot right.

I also miss the different guests they used to have for the paper review and the US news they used to run.

A lot of the specialist programming it had in its early years would be worth bringing back. Something similar to 'Target' which Norman Tebbit and Austin Mitchell presented on Sundays for quite a long time would still work. Tebbit has had health problems this year and probably wouldn't fancy a major broadcasting commitment at his age, and Mitchell is due to retire from Parliament next year anyway, but a similar format with two new presenters could work.

'Jeff Randall Live' was a great show. I haven't seen much of his replacement, Ian King, because it's on too early for me.

'Your Call' would be a welcome return.

I think abandoning specialist programming and analysis in favour of rolling breaking news, especially at a time when most of us can get the news we want online and on our phones, was a mistake.

Shows how often I watch. I didn't know that Faisal Islam was now PE at Sky. (I'm surprised Adam agreed to go, before the GE)!

My first impression was that his English vocabulary seems a little limited (almost child-like).

Other than that he seemed OK (is that good enough for a PE)?

Apparently he'd been at C4N for a decade. Did he start as work experience :D (he doesn't look old enough)?

Adam is still going to anchor the election coverage.

Going off at a tangent - anyone know when Victoria Derbyshire starts this new show of hers on the BBC News channel ?

Where does Kay Burley fit in all this. Presumably she's that bad she has a category all off her own.

    Insufferable

'Target' reminds me of an excellent show I used to enjoy on the BBC News Channel presented by Andrew Neil. It was called Head to Head and featured two political commentators, one each from the left and the right. It was scrapped a few years ago though and the closest equivalent in the current schedules is probably the panel Andrew Neil has on the Sunday Politics.

Totally agree. The music is gaudy as well as the yellow straps, and the constant promotion of the press preview and the way they do it is annoying.

Their new evening show is a missed opportunity. They should have kept Boulton and Co and moved it to prime time in a one hour slot and made it with big political interviews. It's too much of a general news show to make any significant impact and they've got the pace and presentation totally wrong.

I wish they would show CBS News more often, they have started recently to drop it from their programming three or four times a week. And I can't see a reason for this, there is not breaking news four nights a week. Unless CBS are giving the Murdochs alot of scrutiny in the states.

Does anyone else watch CBS News regularly and wants it back ?

I think the question is does anyone else watch Sky News to watch CBS News?

I wonder what the ratings are for Sky these days?

If there is a big story developing I sometimes record it to get a different angle on whatever the story is, but often although it's there in the EPG to record in the evening by the next morning it hasn't appeared in my planner.

I see Sky are flogging this Oscar Pissedoffwith us trial to death again. Why do they do it? no one is interested in this case in the UK, yet Sky keep spending hours on it whilst ignoring other real news stories.

God help us when TV trials come to the English courts we'll never see the end of it.

The laugh is they've sent that complete knob head Jeremy Thompson (what they laughingly call their 'big hitter') out there once again to spout more nonsense.

There has certainly been huge overkill by Sky on this story, the BBC coverage has been much more sensible and their correspondent Andrew Harding's reports have generally been superior to Sky's histrionic reports.

Fair enough, I was really referring to the description of Jeremy Thompson and the dialogue used

CBS is very much the No 3 network news show now with ABC and NBC neck and neck for the top spot. Don't the BBC show ABC during the night ?

As long as the lovely Anna Botting is still on at 9 they can reshuffle as much as they like.

Anna Botting is perfect for me at night, has a kind of soothing voice that sends me off sleep.

It's about time she revisited her wardrobe. Practically the same outfit every time she's on. Same shoes too. My wife notices such things!

To be fair BBC were just as bad if not worse - at times whenever I turned on both were covering it for a good few hours. Both were as bad as each other.

And that comment about Jeremy Thompson is a bit uncalled for.

And I'd have to disagree with most of the Sky News criticism.
It's still my channel of choice really and seems far more news-focussed and sure of itself than it did 4-7 years ago and the presenters are on the whole very good. Though I do have to say I find the 'second-tier' presenters like Lorna Dunkley, Samantha Simmonds and Anna Jones are probably the best on the channel in my view.

I've not really seen the new Adam Boulton program (and I'm not keen on him and Sarah Hewson as a parternship) and I do think Sky News's sports and business coverage feels a bit half-assed these days and I feel could be so much better. But it's still on the whole a very solid channel.

And I appreciate the fact that you get the news whenever you watch - weekday or weekend. You need to watch other news channels to appreciate how good we have it with BBC News and Sky News.
CNN International in particular are so poor- it comes across as very cold when I catch it and full of gimmicky program names and you often have to wait hours (particularly at weekends) to get an actual live news program (which is what you actually tune in for) and you never know what you're getting which for me means it fails as a channel.
Whereas with Sky News (and BBC News) you know you'll get the day's news on the hour every hour.

One thing I don't understand is why we don't get BBC World News over here. It surely can't be that hard to run a non-ads version of the channel - and the adverts issue isn't a problem with them showing some hours of World News over here every day so I can't see what's stopping them showing the other hours. And I'd probably watch as much of it as I do our BBC News channel.
