Eveander is from the Bible Belt

It's sad to hear him say things like that, but I'm not surprised. He was born and brought up in Alabama where it is taught at a young age by the churches that it is wrong to be homosexual.

Being from a bible state myself, I can honestly say I've heard worst. I'm glad he was chalanged.

I think in the US there's more of a wide variety of views on the spectrum of things like homosexuality, whereas in the UK, particularly in the last ten years or so, it's now becoming increasingly rare to see people in and out of the public eye having any sort of 'issue' with people being homosexual.

I think he's probably fallen foul of a cultural thing. Which is not saying that he's right at all, but that I can imagine you could say things like that in certain circles in the US and no one would bat an eyelid whereas in the UK most people would pull you up nowadays I think.

60% of Americans say homosexuality should be accepted by society, compared with 76% in Britain.

There is a link with religious belief:

Roll on the day when people form their own thoughts, and are not coerced into believing absolute drivel from an ancient work of fiction.

And being religious isn't seen as some sort of excuse for holding offensive, nasty opinions (and loads of religious people don't share them - that is a choice).

As I mentioned on another thread, homosexuals are not vilified in the Bible, there are only a few references to homosexuality in the entire huge book (I strongly suspect that most Christians have never read it cover to cover.)

From the fuss some religious types make, you would think it was Commandment Number One, when funnily enough it didn't make the commandments at all.

It's amazing how homophobia is the most important and shared belief of some religious people. You'd think there was nothing more to their religions!

This is the sad thing. The Bible is mostly silent in homosexuality and what bits are in there are actually much in dispute about what the actually mean. But for various reasons the Religious institutions has a vested interest in using a fear and hatred of homosexuals as something to motivate their people. In the same way that McCarthy used fear of socialism and the Nazis used fear of jews.

Evander is a perfect example of a brainwashed sap. He's told what to believe by his pastor/priest and accepts it as a core part of his faith. When it really isn't. Eating shellfish is a sin equal to homosexuality.

I've been subjected to the same sort of conversation that Evander had with ...umm, whatever her name is... It's all religion based and it saddens me that people are blinded by religion. Ignorance beyond belief.

    Well said!

Hilariously, affairs are rampant and out of wedlock sex occurs but that seems to be brushed under the carpet( although, shotgun weddings do happen on occasion.)-- not being judgemental or anything.

And oddly enough his Pastor hasn't told him divorce is not ok according to the Bible in rather clearer terms than the teachings on homosexuality.
