    I'd agree on John Major. A decent man beaten by the system, and his own backbenchers

    Well the information used for the basis of some of the earlier series was given by Marcia Williams and Bernard Donoughue who both worked for Harold Wilson in the 60s and 70s. Which is why the focus was more on the inept Civil Service rather than the politicians.

    So whilst the character was nothing like Harold Wilson, certainly some of the ideas and wishes were.
